U.S. Mint Silver Medals

The United States Mint is primarily known for its silver coins, but the mint also produces a range of different silver medals for investors to enjoy. A silver medal may look similar to a coin, but a medal does not include a face value and is not considered legal tender.

Instead, silver medals are commemorative in nature and are typically sold for their collectability. Many silver medals created by the United States Mint celebrate specific historical events, occasions, or works of art.

The 2025 Comic Art collection of silver medals commemorates some of the most iconic superheroes in comic book history.

Popular U.S. Mint Silver Medals

Since the first modern United States Mint silver medal was released in 2016, the U.S. Mint had produced a number of different silver medals to commemorate key events, anniversaries, and figures.

Some of the most popular U.S. Mint silver medals on the market today come from the 2025 U.S. Mint Comic Art Coin and Medal Collection, a historic partnership between the United States Mint and Warner Brothers to bring iconic superheroes to life on American bullion.

Here’s an overview of some of the most popular U.S. Mint silver medals from the groundbreaking series:

  • 2025 Wonder Woman DC Comics 1 oz Silver Medal | NGC MS70 FDI First Label. This 99.9% pure silver medal features a matte finish, is graded MS70 by NGC, and is secured in a First Day of Issue (FDI) NGC holder. The obverse shows Wonder Woman, lasso on her hip and a sword on her arm, jumping through the air. “LIBERTY” is inscribed above her flowing hair. On the reverse, the hero flies alongside three doves over planet Earth. “WONDER WOMAN” and “PEACE AND EQUALITY” appear on the reverse side of this commemorative medal.
  • 2025 Superman DC Comics 2.5 oz Silver Medal | NGC MS70 ER Superman Label. Graded MS70 and encapsulated in a special wide slab by NGC, this silver medal is something special. Superman flies on the obverse of the 99.9% pure 2.5 oz piece, his cape waving as the sun rises on his modest childhood farm home. “LIBERTY” and the date (2025) appear above and below his portrait. On the reverse, we get an intimate look at the simple life that Superman once lived – a life familiar to much of America. Superman’s father works on an old truck and looks on as a young Clark Kent gazes at the sky to watch a passing plane. Uniquely American and undeniably super, this piece is one for fans of America’s greatest hero.
  • 2025 Batman DC Comics 1 oz Silver Medal | NGC MS70 ER Batman Label. The Dark Knight looks better than ever on this 1 oz U.S. Mint silver medal. Minted with 1 troy oz of 99.9% pure silver and given a stunning matte finish, the piece ships in its NGC-certified slab with a perfect MS70 grade. On the obverse, Batman leaps off of a building with an eagle beside him. “LIBERTY” appears overhead. On the reverse side, Batman stands along the Gotham skyline, the familiar bat signal jutting up into the sky. “BATMAN” appears above the signal, with “JUSTICE AND COURAGE” underneath the hero’s feet.

About the United States Mint

Founded in 1792 under the Coinage Act, the United States Mint is responsible for producing the circulating and bullion coinage of the United States of America. In addition to minting circulating coins for commerce, the U.S. Mint produces a range of different silver bullion coins, medals, and specialty products.

U.S. Mint silver medals date all the way back to 1801, when the United States Mint began producing its first bronze and silver medals under the leadership of Thomas Jefferson.

In the modern era, official silver medal production began in 2018 with the U.S. Mint’s 99.9% pure presidential medals, which have been issued annually since. Other commemorative projects in the U.S. Mint have made use of the medal format, largely because medals are less regulated under federal law than coins.

What is a Silver Medal? | Silver Medals vs. Silver Coins

Silver medals may look like silver coins, but these are actually two different types of silver products.

A silver coin is a circular piece of pure silver given a denomination. Although the value of silver is higher than the face value of any investment-grade U.S. silver coin, coins like the U.S. Mint’s American Silver Eagle are considered legal tender.

By contrast, silver medals carry no face value and are not legal tender. They are also not held to the same requirements as silver coins, which must follow strict guidelines set by Congress. As such, the U.S. Mint is able to exercise more creative control and follow a tighter production timeline when issuing silver medals rather than coins.

The 2025 U.S. Mint Comic Art Coin & Medal Collection

The Comic Art Coin and Medal Collection is a historic project between the United States Mint and Warner Bros. Available in multiple medals, each piece in the series commemorates one of the superheroes from the DC Comics Universe.

This was the first major collaboration between the U.S. Mint and a private corporation, marking a major milestone in both U.S. numismatics and the comic book industry. Declaring comic books a uniquely American art style, the U.S. Mint sought to celebrate the rich traditions and culture of comic books through this 2025 medal series.
