The Batman Silver Medal, Bought on Day One and Graded NGC MS70
This one ounce U.S. Mint Batman medal was purchased within a day of the Mint’s first day of sale and certified by NGC as MS70 First Day of Issue. The Mint opened orders on September 25, 2025 at noon Eastern, and this medal was bought in that first window.
How a Medal Earns First Day of Issue
NGC grants First Day of Issue only to pieces purchased within one day of the first day a mint makes a new issue available. The submitter has to show purchase receipts, the designation is by special request, and NGC decides eligibility. It records the purchase date. The grade, MS70, is a separate judgment of condition.
Gotham on One Side, the Bat-Signal on the Other
The obverse puts Batman in mid-action above Gotham City next to a stone eagle, a design by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna, who worked as a DC artist before the Mint. On the reverse, Batman stands on a ledge with the city behind him and the Bat-Signal in the sky, framed by BATMAN and JUSTICE AND COURAGE.
Part of the Mint’s Comic Art Program
Batman was the program’s second hero, after Superman. The Mint built the series with Warner Bros. Discovery to feature nine DC superheroes across 2025, 2026 and 2027, each issued as a gold $50 coin and as silver medals.
Silver, Matte and Undenominated
This is a medal, so it has no denomination. It was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, carries no mint mark and has a matte finish rather than a proof’s mirror. The one ounce Batman medal had no mintage limit, and NGC’s 70 means no post-production imperfections at 5x magnification.
This is a collectible. Its value comes from its grade, rarity, and design rather than its metal weight alone.

2025 Batman 1 oz Silver Medal NGC MS70 FDI FAQ
What does First Day of Issue mean on a Batman medal?
It means the medal was bought within one day of the Mint’s first day of sale, September 25, 2025, and NGC requires purchase receipts before it grants the designation.
Is FDI the same as Early Releases?
No. NGC’s Early Releases covers pieces it receives within 30 days of release. First Day of Issue depends on the purchase date, which must fall within a day of the first day of sale.
Does FDI make the medal a better grade?
No. The MS70 grade is about condition, and FDI is about timing. NGC records them separately on the label.
Who designed the Batman medal?
Joseph Menna, the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver and a former DC artist, designed the obverse. The reverse credits both Menna and Medallic Artist John P. McGraw.
Is it the same design as the Batman gold coin?
Yes. The gold coin and the silver medals share the same artwork. The gold piece carries coin inscriptions and a $50 denomination, and the medals carry BATMAN and JUSTICE AND COURAGE instead.
