About the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf
First released in 1979, the Canadian Gold Maple is one of the most popular gold coins in the world. This gold coin has been annually produced since 1979, making it one of the longest-running annual release gold coins on the planet.
The obverse of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf depicts the current monarch of Great Britain. Modern Gold Maples depict King Charles III, who was crowned in 2023 and became the second-ever monarch to appear on Canadian coinage in 2024.
The Canadian Gold Maple’s reverse is where the iconic coin gets its name. On the reverse, investors will find a highly detailed portrait of a sugar maple leaf, one of Canada’s most recognizable national symbols.
Gold Maples are available in sizes ranging from 1/20 troy oz, the smallest Gold Maple consistently released, to a full 1 troy oz, the largest annually released Canadian Gold Maple. Each coin in the series is minted with 99.99% pure gold, aside from the 1979-1982 releases, which were 99.9%.

The Royal Canadian Mint
The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in 1908 as an overseas branch of the British Royal Mint. In 1931, the Royal Canadian Mint gained its independence from Great Britain, with control being remanded to the Canadian government.
Today, the Royal Canadian Mint is one of the world’s most respected producers of gold, silver, platinum, and other precious metal products for investors. The mint leverages innovative minting technologies to bring investors new and exciting bullion products, even minting the purest gold coins currently available (99.999% pure).
The Maple Leaf collection is the Royal Canadian Mint’s flagship series. Available in gold, silver, and platinum, the Canadian Maple Leaf collection is highly sought-after by investors as an annual release. The Gold Maple is particularly popular among investors and coin collectors due to its stunning designs, purity, and recognizability.
Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin History and Details
The Canadian Gold Maple was first introduced in 1979, making it one of the first 99.9% pure gold coins to hit markets globally. Its introduction intersected with the increasing unavailability of the South African Gold Krugerrand, a 91.67% pure gold coin that was embargoed by several countries due to South Africa’s apartheid system.
Because of the coin’s heightened purity, stunning designs, and the Royal Canadian Mint’s reputation, the Canadian Gold Maple was an immediate success. Today, the Canadian Gold Maple is one of the world’s leading investment-grade gold bullion coins.
The coin was upgraded to a purity of 99.99% in 1983. Modern Gold Maples are 99.99% pure.

Gold Maple Details and Specifications
The Canadian Gold Maple features an iconic set of designs that celebrate Canada’s national symbol, as well as the country’s historical association with the British Empire.
On the obverse, the Gold Maple showcases the portrait of the current monarch of Great Britain. Until 2024, Queen Elizabeth II was the only British monarch to appear on the iconic Canadian Gold Maple. Her image was replaced with the likeness of King Charles III following his coronation in 2023.
The reverse of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin depicts the coin’s namesake, the Canadian sugar maple leaf. The maple leaf is rendered in exceptional detail and remains one of the most recognizable symbols in bullion.
Gold Maple Security Features
Over the past several decades, the Royal Canadian Mint has improved the security features found on its flagship coin, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.
The modern Canadian Gold Maple Leaf features three distinct security features to help investors authenticate and protect their coins:
- Radial Lines. Radial lines on the obverse and reverse of the Gold Maple make it more difficult for counterfeiters to replicate the valuable gold coin.
- Micro-engraving. The Canadian Gold Maple also includes a micro-engraved maple leaf, which is a tiny maple leaf on the reverse side that can only be seen under magnification. The micro-engraved maple leaf makes it harder for scammers to accurately counterfeit the Gold Maple.
- Bullion DNA. First introduced in 2014, Bullion DNA allows investors and coin dealers to authenticate their Gold Maples using the unique, tough-to-replicate digital signature located on the reverse’s micro-engraved maple leaf.
Together, these three security features make the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf one of the world’s most secure gold bullion coins.

Canadian Gold Maple Weight Availability
The Canadian Gold Maple is produced in a wide range of sizes and weights, making it easy for investors of various budgets to take advantage of this iconic investment-grade gold bullion coin. In fact, the Gold Maple offers one of the largest weight ranges of any gold coin on the market today.
Gold Maple Leaf coins are typically available in the following sizes:
- 1/20 troy ounce.
- 1/10 troy ounce.
- ¼ troy ounce.
- ½ troy ounce.
- 1 troy ounce.
Investors can also occasionally take advantage of even smaller (or larger) Canadian Gold Maple offerings, including the 1 Gram Gold Maple. We love the wide variety of weights available in the Gold Maple collection, and we’re sure that you will, too.
Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Special Editions
Throughout the coin series’ history, the Royal Canadian Mint has offered a variety of special edition Canadian Gold Maple Leafs. Among the most notable special edition Canadian Gold Maples is the “Five-Nines Gold Maple,” a limited edition Canadian Gold Maple minted with 99.999% pure gold.
