The obverse side of this coin has a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait is by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt and features the queen at age 79. Facing to the right, the queen is without her crown which is a departure from how she is usually depicted on coins. She is wearing a simple dress, a pearl necklace, and pearl earrings. Despite the more casual look, the queen looks regal and confident. Above her head is ‘Elizabeth II. Below her portrait is ‘5 Dollars 2023’. The initials, ‘SB’ for the artist, are seen on the queen’s right shoulder.

On the reverse of the coin is Walter Ott’s sugar maple leaf design. This is a highly detailed rendition of the leaf which has become an icon for Canada. The maple leaf is seen all over Canada from the flag to military regalia and even their money. The sugar maple has figured prominently in Canadian history as it was used for food by the aboriginal people. Later the European settlers found the maple tree to be a great source for sugar.  Above the leaf design is ‘Canada’. To the right and left of the leaf is engraved ‘9999’ for the purity. At the bottom of the coin is ‘1/10 oz OR PUR’. Also at the bottom is a little maple leaf which when looked at under a microscope reveals a number ‘23’.

The Royal Canadian Mint is seen the world over as one of the best mints in the world. Founded in 1908, they have built a reputation for making quality products from precious metals. The Maple Leaf series has been a very popular coin and is one of the longest-running bullion coins.
