The 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is a quarter troy ounce of .9999 fine gold from the Royal Canadian Mint, with a $10 Canadian face value, sold in brilliant uncirculated condition. It weighs 7.77 grams and measures 20 mm across. The date comes from the stock we have when your order ships, so the portrait and some design details depend on the year.

Four Nines Since the First Quarter Ounce

The Gold Maple Leaf launched in 1979 as a one-ounce coin struck in .999 gold. In November 1982 the Royal Canadian Mint raised the fineness to .9999 and added the quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce sizes at the same time. That means every quarter-ounce Maple ever struck is .9999 fine, whatever its date. The reverse carries Walter Ott’s maple leaf, with CANADA above, 9999 on both sides, and FINE GOLD 1/4 OZ OR PUR along the rim.

Which Coin You Might Get

Coins dated through 2023 carry Queen Elizabeth II, whose portrait on the Maple changed several times over her reign. From 2024 the obverse shows Steven Rosati’s portrait of King Charles III, facing left. The finely machined radial lines that fill the background on both sides were added in 2015, so a coin dated before 2015 has a plain field instead. Our photos show a 2021 Queen and a 2024 King, both with the radial lines.

The Quarter-Ounce Premium

A quarter ounce of gold costs more per ounce than a full ounce does. The Mint does nearly the same work to strike a 20 mm coin as a 30 mm one, and that cost is spread across a quarter of the gold. You pay a higher premium per ounce on every fractional coin, from any mint and in any year. The quarter ounce is for buying gold in smaller steps, not for the lowest price per ounce.

Will my coin show Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III?

Either. Coins dated 2024 and later carry King Charles III, and earlier coins carry Queen Elizabeth II. The date is chosen from our stock and cannot be requested.

Is every 1/4 oz Gold Maple .9999 fine?

Yes. The quarter-ounce size was introduced in November 1982, when the Mint moved the Maple Leaf from .999 to .9999, so every quarter-ounce coin has been struck at four nines.

Will my coin have the radial lines?

Only if it is dated 2015 or later. That is the year the Mint added the radial lines to the background, and earlier coins have a plain field.

How big is a quarter-ounce Maple?

It is 20 mm across and weighs 7.77 grams, a little larger than a U.S. penny and smaller than a nickel.

Is the 1/4 oz Gold Maple Leaf IRA eligible?

Our Specifications tab lists it as IRA eligible, and at .9999 fine it is well above the purity floor for gold. It has to be held by your IRA’s custodian, so confirm with yours before you buy.
