2025 Batman 2.5 oz Silver Medal, NGC MS70 First Releases

The U.S. Mint’s two-inch Batman silver medal, here certified by NGC as MS70 First Releases. NGC lists the issue as the DC Comics 2025 2.5oz Batman in a matte finish, and pieces it received by the February 24, 2026 cutoff qualified for the designation.

First Releases and Early Releases Are the Same Thing

NGC uses the two names interchangeably, with the same definition and the same cutoff dates. Either one marks a piece received by NGC or an approved depository within 30 days of an issue’s release. For the 2.5 ounce Batman that window closed on February 24, 2026, months after the Mint opened orders on September 25, 2025 and set shipping for the winter.

The Larger of Two Batman Medals

The Mint struck Batman in silver at two sizes. This is the bigger one, 2.5 troy ounces at 50.80 mm against the one ounce medal’s 40.60 mm, and it was the size with a mintage limit. The one ounce was never capped.

A Former DC Artist’s Batman

Chief Engraver Joseph Menna drew for DC before the Mint, and his obverse sets Batman in action in Gotham with a stone eagle and the word LIBERTY. On the reverse Batman stands in silhouette on a skyscraper ledge as the Bat-Signal shines over the city, with BATMAN and JUSTICE AND COURAGE. Batman was the second hero in the Mint’s Comic Art Coin and Medal Program with Warner Bros. Discovery, after Superman.

Matte Silver, No Denomination

The medal carries no denomination, since only the gold Batman piece is a coin. It was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 99.9% fine silver with a matte finish and no mint mark. NGC grades it on the MS scale, where 70 means no post-production imperfections at 5x magnification.

This is a collectible. Its value comes from its grade, rarity, and design rather than its metal weight alone.

2025 Batman 2.5 oz Silver Medal NGC MS70 FR FAQ

What does FR mean on this medal?

FR is First Releases. NGC gave it to pieces received within 30 days of the issue’s release, and for the 2.5 ounce Batman the cutoff was February 24, 2026.

Is First Releases better than Early Releases?

No. NGC treats them as interchangeable terms, with one definition and one set of cutoff dates.

How is FR different from First Day of Issue?

First Releases depends on when NGC received the medal. First Day of Issue depends on the purchase date, which has to fall within one day of the Mint’s first day of sale.

How much silver is in it?

The medal holds 2.5 troy ounces of 99.9% fine silver, two and a half times the silver in the one ounce Batman.

Did the Mint limit the 2.5 oz Batman?

Yes. It set a mintage limit on the 2.5 ounce size, and for the first 24 hours of sales each household could order only one.
