Popular U.S. Mint Gold, Silver, and Platinum Coins
The first investment-grade bullion coins produced by the U.S. Mint were the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle, both of which were first minted in 1986. Since then, the U.S. Mint has become one of the world’s largest producers of bullion coins in gold, silver, platinum, and even palladium.
Popular precious metal products from the United States Mint include:
- American Silver Eagle. Widely considered to be the best-selling silver bullion coin in the world, the American Silver Eagle is the U.S. Mint’s flagship product and the official silver coin of the United States of America. The coin is minted with 99.9% pure silver and features Adolph A. Weinman’s 1916 depiction of Walking Lady Liberty on the obverse. The reverse of the American Silver Eagle depicted John Mercanti’s depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States until 2021, when it was replaced with an action shot of a bald eagle flying with a branch in its talons designed by Emily Damstra. Today, the American Silver Eagle is an icon and one of the most sought-after silver bullion coins in the world.
- American Gold Eagle. The American Gold Eagle is the national gold bullion coin of the United States. It contains 1 troy oz of 91.67% pure gold and depicts Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Walking Lady Liberty on the obverse. The reverse side of the Gold Eagle was updated in 2021, at which point it switched from Miley Busiek Frost’s depiction of a bald eagle carrying an olive branch to its family to Jennie Norris’ close-up portrait of a bald eagle’s face. For gold investors, the IRA-eligible American Gold Eagle is tough to beat.
- American Gold Buffalo. The American Gold Buffalo was first released in 2006, making it the newest annual release gold bullion coin introduced by the U.S. Mint. With a purity of 99.99%, the Gold Buffalo is the purest gold bullion coin minted by the United States Mint. The coin features the same designs found on the 1913 Buffalo nickel. Penned by James Earle Fraser, these designs depict a Native American leader on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse. As the purest U.S. Mint gold coin on the market, the American Gold Buffalo is a must-buy for investors who love United States bullion and 24k gold coins.
- American Platinum Eagle. First introduced in 1997, the American Platinum Eagle is the most consistently minted U.S. Mint platinum coin. The Platinum Eagle is minted with 99.95% pure platinum and features an obverse depiction of “Lady Liberty looking to the future.” The obverse of this coin was designed by the U.S. Chief Engraver John Mercanti. On the reverse, the American Platinum Eagle depicts Thomas D. Rogers’ artwork of an American bald eagle flying in front of a rising sun.
- American Palladium Eagle. The newest Eagle collection coin released by the U.S. Mint, the American Palladium Eagle was first unveiled in 2017 and is released only occasionally by the United States Mint. The coin is highly collectible due to its inconsistent releases. The coin’s obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s “Winged Liberty Head” design, which appears on the Mercury dime. On the reverse, investors will find another Weinman design, the artist’s bald eagle design from the 1907 AIA Gold Medal. The American Palladium Eagle is minted with 99.95% fine palladium and has become one of the world’s most sought-after palladium coins.

About the United States Mint
For over 230 years, the United States Mint has been responsible for producing the coinage of the United States of America. The mint’s foray into bullion coins didn’t begin until 1986 with the release of the American Gold Eagle and American Silver Eagle. Since then, operations have expanded to include a range of precious metal coins in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.
Today, the U.S. Mint is one of the world’s leading producers of precious metal coins. The United States Mint manufactures millions of silver, gold, and platinum coins annually for investors all around the world.

U.S. Mint History
The United States Mint was founded in 1792 under the Coinage Act of 1792. For 193 years, the U.S. Mint exclusively produced currency coinage for circulation, as well as a limited number of coins for collectors. In 1986, the U.S. Mint released the American Gold Eagle and American Silver Eagle, marking the mint’s first production of modern bullion coins for investors.
The American Eagle coins were met with immediate success among investors both inside and outside of the United States. In the years that followed, the U.S. Mint expanded its bullion offerings to include other precious metal coins, including American Eagles in platinum and palladium, as well as the 99.99% pure American Gold Buffalo.
Fast-forward to today, and the U.S. Mint has become one of the largest producers of precious metal coins in the world. The American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle are staples for precious metal portfolios all over the world, and the Gold Buffalo remains the purest bullion coin produced by the U.S. Mint.
U.S. Mint Locations and Mint Marks
Typically, modern U.S. Mint coins can feature four possible mint marks, depending on the mint facility that minted them:
- Philadelphia (No Mint Mark)
- West Point (W)
- Denver (D)
- San Francisco (S)
Bullion coins produced by the U.S. Mint are typically minted at either West Point (W) or Philadelphia (No Mint Mark).
