The 2.5 oz Batman Silver Medal, NGC MS70 First Day of Issue
This is the larger of the U.S. Mint’s two Batman silver medals, 2.5 troy ounces and 50.80 mm across, certified by NGC as MS70 First Day of Issue. Unlike the one ounce version, the 2.5 ounce medal was a limited issue, and on its first day the Mint let each household order just one.
More Room for Gotham
At 50.80 mm the medal gives the Batman designs more than 10 mm of extra width over the 40.60 mm one ounce. Joseph Menna’s obverse shows Batman in action over Gotham with a stone eagle, and the reverse shows him in silhouette on a skyscraper ledge with the Bat-Signal overhead and the inscriptions BATMAN and JUSTICE AND COURAGE. Menna, the Mint’s Chief Engraver, worked as a DC artist before joining it.
One Per Household on Day One
Orders opened September 25, 2025 at noon Eastern. For the first 24 hours the Mint capped each household at one 2.5 ounce medal, the same limit it placed on the gold coin. NGC’s First Day of Issue goes only to pieces purchased within one day of the first day of sale, backed by purchase receipts and granted only on special request.
The Second Release in the Comic Art Program
The Mint’s Comic Art Coin and Medal Program with Warner Bros. Discovery spotlights three DC heroes each year from 2025 through 2027. Superman launched it, and Batman was second. Batman appears on a half ounce gold $50 coin and on matte silver medals in one ounce and 2.5 ounce sizes.
Medal, Matte and Graded
The 2.5 ounce Batman is a medal with no denomination, struck at the Philadelphia Mint with no mint mark in a matte finish. NGC files it as a matte MS issue, and its 70 means no post-production imperfections at 5x magnification.
This is a collectible. Its value comes from its grade, rarity, and design rather than its metal weight alone.
