The First Medal of the Mint’s Comic Art Program, Superman in NGC MS70 FDI

Superman opened the U.S. Mint’s Comic Art Coin and Medal Program on July 24, 2025, and this one ounce silver medal from that first release is certified MS70 First Day of Issue by NGC. It was bought within one day of the Mint’s first day of sale and struck at Philadelphia in 99.9% fine silver.

The Kent Farm and the Man of Steel

U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna, a former DC artist, designed the obverse: Superman flying over the Kent family farm. The Mint ties the scene to the sun that fuels his powers and to the values Martha and Jonathan Kent gave the boy they raised. The reverse turns to the man behind the cape, showing a young Clark Kent deep in thought as a plane passes overhead while his father watches from a distance, with SUPERMAN and HOPE AND STRENGTH.

Where the Program Began

The Mint built the Comic Art program with Warner Bros. Discovery to feature three DC heroes a year from 2025 through 2027. Superman came first, ahead of Batman and Wonder Woman, and his release included a half ounce gold $50 coin and silver medals in one ounce and 2.5 ounce sizes.

Bought on Release Day

NGC’s First Day of Issue applies only to pieces purchased within one day of the first day a mint offers them. The submitter has to provide purchase receipts and request the designation, and NGC decides eligibility. For Superman, the Mint opened orders at noon Eastern on July 24, 2025.

A Medal at MS70

The Superman silver piece is a medal with no denomination. Only the gold Superman is a coin. It has a matte finish and a plain edge, and NGC’s 70 means no post-production imperfections at 5x magnification. The Mint set no mintage limit on the one ounce size.

This is a collectible. Its value comes from its grade, rarity, and design rather than its metal weight alone.
