Justice and Courage in an Ounce of Silver, NGC MS70 First Day of Issue
The U.S. Mint’s Batman medal carries the words JUSTICE AND COURAGE on its Bat-Signal reverse, and this one ounce example is certified MS70 First Day of Issue by NGC. It was bought within a day of the Mint’s opening sale on September 25, 2025.
The Signal Over Gotham
On the reverse, Batman watches from a skyscraper ledge in silhouette while the Bat-Signal lights the night over Gotham. The obverse, inscribed LIBERTY, is by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver and former DC artist Joseph Menna, and shows the Caped Crusader in action beside a stone eagle. The silver medals carry BATMAN and JUSTICE AND COURAGE where the gold coin has its coin inscriptions.
Release Day, Recorded by NGC
To earn First Day of Issue, a piece has to be bought within one day of the first day the Mint offers it. NGC asks for purchase receipts and grants the designation only on special request. That puts a date on the purchase. The MS70 grade, NGC’s top grade, stands on its own: no post-production imperfections at 5x magnification.
One of Nine DC Heroes at the Mint
Batman came second in the Mint’s Comic Art Coin and Medal Program, a partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery that features three DC heroes a year from 2025 through 2027. Superman came before him. Each release pairs a half ounce gold $50 coin with silver medals in one ounce and 2.5 ounce sizes.
Why It Is a Medal
The Mint issued the silver Batman pieces as medals. That means no denomination, no mint mark and a matte surface, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Mint set no mintage limit on the one ounce size.
This is a collectible. Its value comes from its grade, rarity, and design rather than its metal weight alone.
