The Top 5 Largest Gold Nuggets Ever Found

Everybody loves gold. From the world’s earliest gold coins to modern gold jewelry, the precious metal has always been one of humanity’s greatest obsessions. Gold doesn’t start out in the shape of a coin or bar, though. Some of the most valuable gold discoveries of all time have come in the form of gold nuggets, naturally occurring chunks of gold found near existing gold veins.

Most gold nuggets are very small, but large gold nuggets often make international headlines.

What is the largest gold nugget ever found? The “Welcome Stranger” gold nugget was discovered in Victoria, Australia and is considered the largest gold nugget ever found. Once trimmed, the nugget weighed 71 kilograms, and its melt value today would be nearly $5.46 million USD.

Although the Welcome Stranger gold nugget is the largest gold nugget ever discovered, it certainly is not the only massive nugget unearthed by miners. Over the past two centuries, treasure hunters have discovered dozens of unbelievably large and immeasurably valuable gold nuggets.

On this page, we’re counting down the top 5 largest gold nuggets ever discovered.

What is a Gold Nugget?

What is a gold nugget? Gold nuggets are naturally occurring chunks of gold. Most gold nuggets are found using placer mining, which involves sifting through silt, sand, and other minerals to search for precious metals. Occasionally, gold nuggets can be discovered in the ruins of old mining operations. Some massive gold nuggets have been found by mistake. This was the case for the 17-pound gold nugget discovered by a 12-year-old that kickstarted the Carolina Gold Rush!

Clearly, gold nuggets are discovered in a variety of different ways. Most of the largest gold nuggets ever found were discovered during either amateur or professional mining operations.

Where Are Gold Nuggets Found?

Gold nuggets can develop nearly anywhere, but they are usually found in existing gold veins. A gold vein is a large cache of gold hidden inside the Earth’s crust. Gold veins can be very small, only containing a few grams of gold. Very rarely, large, natural chunks of gold called gold nuggets are found within – or near – an existing vein of gold.

Where are gold nuggets found? Gold nuggets are mostly found in rivers, old stream beds, or creeks. Technically, gold veins (and gold nuggets) can be found anywhere within the Earth’s crust. Since flowing rivers erode the soil underneath them, it’s often easier to find gold in a river bed than underneath the surface of the Earth.

Gold’s tendency to be discovered inside flowing bodies of water is one reason why miners during the American Gold Rush frequently panned for gold in rivers and streams.

How Much is a Gold Nugget Worth?

How much is a gold nugget worth? Gold nuggets vary in value from less than $100 to millions of dollars, depending on their size and purity. Remember – most discovered gold nuggets are very small, so the average gold nugget isn’t worth a lot of money. Large gold nuggets, such as the five largest gold nuggets we’re covering on this page, can be worth millions of dollars.

It’s also important to remember that a gold nugget is never as pure as modern gold coins are. Gold nuggets occur naturally, so the gold they contain is mixed with other, less valuable minerals. Some gold nuggets are highly pure and include very few additional alloys. Other gold nuggets are 24k or purer gold, making them far more valuable to buyers.

What are the biggest gold nuggets ever discovered?

Here are the top five largest gold nuggets ever unearthed:

  1. “Welcome Stranger” Gold Nugget – 2,284 troy ounces (71 kilograms, 156.6 pounds)
  2. “Welcome” Gold Nugget – 2,218 troy ounces (69 kilograms, 152.1 pounds)
  3. “Pepita Canaã” Gold Nugget – 1,955 troy ounces (60.8 kilograms, 134.1 pounds)

  5. “State of Pará” Gold Nugget – 1,506.2 troy ounces (46.85 kilograms, 103.28 pounds)

Each of the world’s biggest gold nugget discoveries has its own story. Below, we’re walking readers through the fantastic tales behind the most groundbreaking gold nuggets ever found.

#1: Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget – Moliagul, Victoria, Australia

In 1869, two miners near Dunolly, Australia made a life-changing discovery. Lodged 1.2 inches under the surface of the Earth was the largest gold nugget either man had ever seen. As they would soon find out, it was also the largest gold nugget anyone had ever seen.

This gold nugget was nicknamed the “Welcome Stranger.” The Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget is the largest gold nugget ever discovered, weighing 78 kilograms, or 2,520 troy ounces. Because the nugget was so large, a blacksmith had to break it into three separate pieces in order to determine its exact weight. After the blacksmith removed the non-gold parts of the nugget, its net weight was determined to be 2,284 troy ounces.

Weighing 2,284 troy ounces once trimmed down, the Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget is by far the largest gold nugget ever discovered. How much was the Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget worth? Given gold prices as of July 2024, the Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget’s melt value is approximately $5.46 million USD.

The Welcome Stranger gold nugget was also one of the purest gold nuggets ever discovered. One analysis found that the massive chunk of gold was 98.6% pure!

#2:  Welcome Gold Nugget – Ballarat, Victoria, Australia

The second largest gold nugget ever found was also discovered in Victoria, Australia. In 1858, two Cornish miners found the nugget at the roof of a Red Hill Mining Company mining tunnel. Unlike the Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget, the Welcome Nugget was found deep underneath the surface of the Earth – around 180 feet underground.

Until the discovery of the Welcome Stranger eleven years later, the Welcome gold nugget held the record for the biggest gold nugget ever unearthed. How big was the Welcome Gold Nugget? The Welcome Nugget weighed 2,217 troy ounces and held the record for the largest gold nugget in the world until it was eclipsed by the Welcome Stranger Nugget in 1869.

The Welcome Nugget is another of the purest gold nuggets ever found. It clocked in at a fineness of 99%, making it nearly as pure as some modern gold bullion coins. How much would the Welcome Nugget be worth today? If it were sold today, the melt value of Australia’s Welcome Gold Nugget would be worth $5,301,020.

#3: Pepita Canaã Gold Nugget – State of Pará, Brazil

The first and second largest gold nuggets were discovered in Australia, but the bronze medal winner was found in Brazil. Known as the Pepita Canaã, the largest gold nugget ever discovered in Brazil was unearthed inside the Serra Pelada Mine within the Brazilian State of Pará. The total weight of the State of Pará Gold Nugget was 1,995 troy ounces, but its net weight was lower at 1,682.5 troy ounces.

If it was sold today, this massive gold nugget would be worth around $4,021,175. Although the Pepita Canaã Gold Nugget is not the largest gold nugget ever found, it is the largest gold nugget currently in existence. The other, larger gold nuggets on this page were eventually melted down after being sold, but the Pepita Canaã Gold Nugget is still on display today.

The Pepita Canaã Gold Nugget is the largest gold nugget currently in existence and is worth over $4 million USD!

#4: Monumental Gold Nugget – Sierra Buttes, United States

The Monumental Gold Nugget is the fourth biggest gold nugget ever found and the largest nugget discovered in the United States. Weighing in at 1,593 troy ounces (109.2 pounds), the Monumental Gold Nugget was found in August of 1869 within the Sierra Buttes region of California by a large group of miners.

Today, a life-size replica of the Monumental Gold Nugget is on display at the Kentucky Mint Museum. Although the Monumental Gold Nugget was discovered near the Sierra Buttes Mine, it was actually found by miners who were on their way to work! The men looked down at the trail they were walking on and saw the tip of the nugget poking out of the ground.

A wealthy California hotel mogul named Robert B. Woodward bought the gold nugget for $21,637. Today, the Monumental Gold Nugget would be worth far more than just $20,000. How much money is the Monumental Gold Nugget worth? If the massive gold nugget were sold at auction today, its gold alone would be worth an estimated $3,807,270

#5: State of Pará Gold Nugget – State of Pará, Brazil

The fifth largest gold nugget ever found was discovered in the same region as the Pepita Canaã Gold Nugget. Unlike most of the other gold nuggets on our list, this gold nugget is still on display today at Brazil’s Banco Central Museum. The unnamed State of Pará Gold Nugget weighs 1,506.2 troy ounces. If it were melted down for its gold content, the nugget would be worth at least $3,599,000.

Final Thoughts: What Is the Biggest Gold Nugget Ever Found?

The biggest gold nugget ever found is the “Welcome Stranger,” a 71 kilogram (2,284) gold nugget discovered in Victoria, Australia. Other gold nuggets have gotten very close to overcoming the weight of the Welcome Stranger, and the largest gold nugget still in existence is the Pepita Canaã Gold Nugget unearthed in the State of Pará region of Brazil.

Will a larger gold nugget ever be discovered? Maybe, but we find it highly unlikely that any miner will unearth a gold nugget anywhere near the size of “Welcome Stranger.”
