US Mint to Release 250,000 USA 250 Privy Mark Quarters – Here’s What to Know.

The U.S. Mint is releasing a limited number of special quarters to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. Announced on June 23rd, the quarters will have no mint marks and will include a unique “July 4th” privy mark to commemorate the special occasion. With a limited mintage of only 250,000, this will be one of the rarest modern circulating coins released by the mint.

According to the press release from the United States Mint, these coins will be available to consumers “in time for the Fourth of July.” In other words, it’s entirely possible that these coins have already been released into general circulation. The U.S. Mint stipulated that the new quarters will be “placed randomly into circulation,” creating a unique opportunity for collectors to chase these limited-edition quarters in the wild.

About the 4th of July Privy U.S. Quarter

The July 4th Privy “Declaration of Independence” quarter features the portrait of a young Thomas Jefferson on the obverse. To Jefferson’s left, a privy mark labeled “July 4th” can be found. The reverse of the coin depicts the cracked Liberty Bell.

Jefferson appears on this unique U.S. quarter to commemorate the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson is considered the principal author of the document and wrote its first draft.

A limited number (250,000) of quarters released into circulation over the summer will look a bit different than the others. Named the “Declaration of Independence July 4th Privy” quarter, these limited-edition coins are being released randomly into circulation.

This means that, unlike most limited U.S. Mint releases, these coins will be scattered throughout the United States. Most of the coins will likely end up in the banking system and be given out as change to customers. In other words, collectors may be able to find these rare new U.S. quarters in the wild.

The announcement came as part of the U.S. Mint’s USA 250 celebration.

The United States Mint (Mint) will produce 250,000 Semiquincentennial 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarters featuring a special “July 4th” privy mark in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Bearing no mint mark, these unique quarters will be placed randomly into circulation, offering Americans a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discover a piece of history in everyday transactions.

With such a limited mintage, experts say that the coin is sure to be a numismatic rarity. Over 1 billion total quarters were minted in 2025, with the rarest one offering a mintage of 63,000,000.

How to Find a July 4th Privy Quarter

Because the July 4th Privy quarter is being released into general circulation, it is possible to find these coins in the wild. In other words, keep checking your change if you want to find one for yourself!

However, these quarters will first appear in the U.S. banking system. This makes them a prime target for coin roll hunters. Coin roll hunting is the practice of buying rolls of coins from banks in order to search for rare coins, such as silvers, key dates, errors, or other numismatic rarities. Since the July 4th Privy quarter is being released to banks across the country at random, coin roll hunting may be an effective way to find one.

Competition will be fierce. Numismatists are already preparing for the July 4th Privy quarter to be a sought-after piece, and the U.S. Mint rarely releases coins into circulation with such a deliberately low mintage.

What is a July 4th Privy Quarter Worth?

At this point it is not clear how much the July 4th Privy quarter will be worth. However, its limited mintage and the fact that it cannot be purchased directly from the U.S. Mint suggest that it will be highly desirable to collectors.

Even before the coins were confirmed as circulating, money was already on the table for lucky collectors who manage to get their hands on one.

The Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) is already offering a $2,500 reward for the first coin entered for professional grading. Only NGC members are eligible for the promotion, but the race is on!

The first NGC collector member to submit the Declaration of Independence Quarter featuring the special “July 4th” privy mark will be eligible to win $2,500 cash.

The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) responded with its own bounty for the first July 4th quarter submitted for grading. On July 2nd, PCGS announced that it will reward $5,000 to the first of these coins submitted, along with a special label to mark the occasion.

PCGS will pay a $5,000 bounty for the first 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarter with the special July 4th privy mark that gets shipped for grading submission. The winning submitter will also receive the “First Discovery” pedigree on the PCGS label.

As far as the coin’s ultimate value is concerned, it’s probably too soon to tell. The U.S. Mint very rarely releases modern coins with such low mintages, and similar examples are typically available for purchase directly from the mint. In this case, collectors are looking at a coin that is unavailable for purchase at the U.S. Mint with a limited mintage and general circulation practices.

One small insight is worth noting, though. Occasionally, a coin is considered so collectable that many specimens are preserved immediately by collectors. This was especially true during the 20th century, when a coin collecting craze led to shortages of certain coins perceived as “rare.” When this happens, a glut of specimens in fantastic condition leads to lower-than-expected prices on the secondary numismatic market.

If a substantial number of the 250,000 July 4th Privy quarters are gobbled up by collectors in excellent condition, they could underperform as a numismatic rarity. As always, though, expect supply and demand to play a major role in how much this coin is worth in the coming years.

Final Thoughts: Will You Find a Rare 4th of July Privy Quarter?

The announcement of a limited-edition circulation coin by the U.S. Mint is always an exciting occasion for collectors, but the new 4th of July Privy quarter is something special. With a mintage of only 250,000, no availability for direct purchase from the U.S. Mint, and general circulation for all minted specimens, this new coin may kick off a major treasure hunt for collectors all over the country.

Whether you want to chase the large bounties being offered by leading coin grading services or you just want one for your personal collection, it may be time to start hunting through coin rolls!
