Royal Canadian Mint Creates Largest Silver Maple To Date
(Bullion News Network) – The Royal Canadian Mint has once again pushed the boundaries of minting technology to create a stunningly large Canadian Silver Maple. Weighing 10 kilograms and minted with a purity of 99.99%, the coin is the largest Canadian Silver Maple ever minted. Representatives from the RCM presented the coin at the 2025 World Money Fair, one of the world’s largest annual gatherings for coin dealers and mints. According to Royal Canadian Mint President Marie Lemay, the coin exemplifies the standards of purity and excellence that have made the mint a leading producer of high-quality bullion coinage.
I am very proud to see those qualities amplified in our new 10 kilo, 99.99% pure Big Silver Maple Leaf that is yet another shining example of the talent and innovation of the people behind the one of the world’s favorite silver bullion coins.
Minting a coin of this size presents a number of logistical and artistic challenges to manufacturers. Abnormally sized coins are difficult to design since they may not fit in standard coining presses. When the Royal Mint released its groundbreaking 10 kilo Queen’s Beasts Completer gold coin, mint artists used a combination of specialized laser engraving and hand finishing in order to add the mint’s designs to the coin. The Royal Canadian Mint appears to have used a “customized 2,500-ton hydraulic press” in order to strike the coin using somewhat traditional techniques, according to a press release published in Coin Week.
The coin features the same classic designs investors will find on any silver maple. On the obverse, Walter Ott’s iconic maple leaf design is punctuated by what the RCM calls a “dazzling array of radial lines.” These same radial lines also underscore Steven Rosati’s reverse-side portrait of King Charles III, which first appeared on the coin series in 2024.
Dubbed the “Big Maple,” RCM’s upsized rendition of the Canadian Silver Maple is more than just a milestone for Canada’s national mint. Both its weight and diameter make the Royal Canadian Mint’s 10 kg Silver Maple Leaf the largest 99.99% pure silver coin in the world.
The Royal Canadian Mint is no stranger to size-related innovation in bullion coinage. The gold “Big Maple” minted in 2007 was the world’s largest – and purest – gold coin until the release of the larger 1 Ton Gold Kangaroo by Perth Mint in 2011. Royal Canadian Mint engineers were also the first in the world to successfully mint a gold coin with a purity of 99.999%.
Mintage for the “Big Silver Maple” is limited to just 299 coins. The coin currently retails at over $17,300 USD. Interested collectors and investors are able to call the Royal Canadian Mint directly for more information.
