About the Perth Mint

The Perth Mint is Australia’s national mint. Responsible for producing bullion coins on behalf of the country, the Perth Mint manufactures some of the best-selling gold, silver, and platinum coins in the world. Aside from its bullion coin offerings, the Perth Mint also produces a range of bullion bars for investors to enjoy.

Much like the Canadian Royal Mint, the Perth Mint began as a subsidiary of England’s national mint, the British Royal Mint. Ever since investment-grade modern bullion coins took the collector world by storm in the 1980s, the historic Perth Mint has been one of the world’s most prolific producers of high-quality investment coins.

A Brief History of the Perth Mint

The Perth Mint’s history begins in 1899, when it was opened as one of the British Royal Mint’s foreign branches. Large gold discoveries in Western Australia motivated the British government to open the Perth Mint, a project spearheaded by Western Australia’s Premier, Sir John Forrest.

While Australia gained its independence just two years after the Perth Mint’s founding, the Perth Mint itself wouldn’t become fully owned by Western Australia until July 1, 1970. The British government handed over full control of the Perth Mint to the Australian government on that day, paving the way for decades of minting innovation to come.

In 1986, the Perth Mint released its most popular product yet, the Australian Gold Nugget. This 1 oz gold coin would eventually become the iconic Australian Gold Kangaroo Coin, which is  now one of the world’s most popular gold coins. A silver version of the coin was introduced in 1993, followed by platinum in 2017.
