While Australia gained its independence just two years after the Perth Mint’s founding, the Perth Mint itself wouldn’t become fully owned by Western Australia until July 1, 1970. The British government handed over full control of the Perth Mint to the Australian government on that day, paving the way for decades of minting innovation to come.

In 1986, the Perth Mint released its most popular product yet, the Australian Gold Nugget.
