Legal tender at two dollars, struck Brilliant Uncirculated, 50.8 mm across, with a micro-engraved security letter on the reverse. Two Ounces of Silver for the Year of the Goat

This is a two troy ounce silver coin, .9999 fine, struck by the Perth Mint for 2027 as the Year of the Goat entry in Lunar Series III. It is legal tender in Australia at two dollars, and the goat design runs for this year only before the cycle turns to the monkey.

The Herd and the Blossom

Natasha Muhl designed the reverse: three goats at rest among rocks, a mature one, a young one and a kid, a plum blossom tree to one side and hills in the distance. The Perth Mint reads the group as “Three Goats Bring Bliss,” an image of spring arriving after winter and of fresh starts, with the blossom tree carrying the same note of resilience. The Chinese character for goat sits above GOAT 2027, beside the P mintmark. The obverse is Dan Thorne’s King Charles III, ringed by CHARLES III, AUSTRALIA, 2 oz 9999 Ag and 2 DOLLARS.

The 2 oz Size, Weighed Up

Two ounces on one coin carries a lower premium per ounce than the 1 oz Goat, and it means half the pieces to store, count and insure. The other side of that: you sell it whole rather than an ounce at a time, one ounce coins are the more common trade size, and at 50.8 mm it needs a larger capsule and tube than a standard ounce. It is a consolidation choice, not a trading one.

No Cap on This One

The 2 oz Goat has no mintage limit. The Perth Mint keeps striking it through the end of 2027, then publishes the final figure, so the number is settled after the fact. The capped size in this release is the 1 oz, limited to 300,000. This one you buy for the design and the silver, not a low mintage.

Specifications

The coin is two troy ounces of .9999 fine silver, 50.8 mm across and 4.8 mm thick, with a reeded edge and a two dollar Australian face value, struck Brilliant Uncirculated by the Perth Mint for 2027, with no mintage limit. A micro-engraved letter on the reverse serves as a security feature, readable only under magnification. See the Specifications tab for packaging and the full detail.

Lunar Goat Coin FAQ

How is the 2 oz different from the 1 oz Lunar?

It holds twice the silver at a slightly lower premium per ounce, and it is a single coin instead of two. The tradeoffs are that you cannot sell half of it and that one ounce coins move faster on the resale market.

Is there a mintage limit?

No. The 2 oz is struck without a cap; the Perth Mint declares the final mintage after production ends in 2027. Only the 1 oz Goat in this release is capped, at 300,000.

What do the three goats mean?

The Perth Mint ties them to “Three Goats Bring Bliss,” a saying about winter ending and spring, renewal and new beginnings. The plum blossom tree in the scene adds resilience and hope.

What is the security feature?

A micro-engraved letter set into the reverse design, small enough to need a magnifying glass. It makes the coin harder to counterfeit and appears on every Lunar Series III coin.

Is this coin IRA eligible?

Yes. At .9999 fine from a sovereign mint, it meets the silver rule for a precious metals IRA, and a custodian can hold it the same as a Silver Maple or Kangaroo.
