A Company That Outgrew Its Own Bars

Charles Engelhard Sr. started the company in New Jersey in 1902, and it grew through a string of acquisitions into the world’s largest precious metals refiner before the century was out. The company stopped producing silver bars in the 1980s, and BASF bought the Engelhard Corporation outright in 2006 for $5 billion. In 2025, BASF’s metals division licensed the Engelhard name back into production, but only for small formats, a 1 oz silver round, a 3 oz cast bar, and a Liberty-series set up to 10 oz. No 100 oz bar was part of that relaunch, so this size stays exactly what it’s been for decades: vintage stock only. This size never came back, even with the brand’s 2025 return.

 

Poured or Struck, Dealer’s Choice

This listing draws from both major Engelhard styles. Poured bars carry a distinctive fan-shaped starburst texture from silver cooling in an open mold, rippled edges, and an ENGELHARD cartouche stamped near the top with a serial number below it, no two surfaces quite alike. Struck bars have squared profiles and brighter, more uniform faces, with the ENGELHARD name rendered as either a bold raised wordmark or enclosed in an outlined box, and a serial number in the corner. Variety, serial number, and hallmark style are dealer’s choice and can’t be requested. Poured or struck, whichever the mix gives you.

 

Secondary Market, Stated Plainly

These bars have circulated through the secondary market for decades, so expect toning, scratches, handling marks, or surface haze depending on the individual piece. None of that touches the silver, which the bar’s own hallmark and purity stamp guarantee regardless of how it looks. The silver isn’t affected, only the surface shows the bar’s age.

 

Royal Standing, Still Eligible for an IRA

At .999+ fine, this bar clears the IRS’s .995 minimum for a precious metals IRA with room to spare, the same floor every current LBMA-recognized refiner has to clear. Age and cosmetic condition don’t change that fineness. Purity clears the IRA floor, decades-old stock or not.

Does Engelhard still make silver bars?

Not in this size. BASF’s metals division revived the Engelhard name in 2025 for a handful of small silver and gold products, but nothing at 100 oz. Every 100 oz Engelhard bar available today is original stock from before the company stopped making them in the 1980s. The name is back, this size isn’t.

 

Will I get a poured or struck bar?

Either, dealer’s choice based on what’s in stock. Poured bars carry a starburst texture from cooling in an open mold; struck bars have squared, more uniform faces. Style is our choice, not a request you can make.

 

What condition are these bars in?

Secondary market, meaning toning, scratches, or handling marks are normal for a bar this old. None of it affects the silver content. Condition reflects age, not a defect in the metal.
