Johnson Matthey exited the silver bar business years ago, selling its refining operations to Asahi in 2015. Nothing new has been produced since, so every JM bar on the market comes from a fixed and shrinking pool. The front carries the company’s diamond-shaped cartouche near the top, enclosing the interlocked JM monogram with JOHNSON MATTHEY running around the border. The face itself is smooth and slightly domed, with a soft flow line running down the center where the silver settled. Near the base the bar is stamped 100 OZ. with 999 to the lower left and an oval assayer hallmark beside it. Some bars also carry a serial number, though this varies by production run.

The back is the poured face left exactly as it cooled: a coarse, crystalline surface with heavy pitting, small voids, and irregular fracture lines running across the field. The texture differs on every bar, and the one you receive will not match the photographs.

These are secondary market bars. They have been stored and handled over the years, so expect toning, scratches, handling marks, or surface haze depending on the individual piece. None of that affects the silver, which the JM hallmark and purity stamp guarantee. Serial numbers, hallmark variants, and condition cannot be selected.
