The Sunshine Mint 5 gram Gold Bar holds 5 grams of .9999 fine gold, made in the USA by Sunshine Minting, the company known for supplying silver planchets to the United States Mint. It is sold new, sealed in Sunshine’s own assay card, with a serial number stamped on the bar.
Eagle on the Front, Sunburst on the Back
The front carries Sunshine’s round emblem, an eagle with spread wings over a rising sun, with SUNSHINE above and MINTING below. Under it, the bar is stamped .9999 FINE, GOLD and 5 GRAMS, then the bar’s own serial number in a small panel. The back is covered in diagonal rows of sunbursts with a plain round disc at the center.
What the Disc Is For
That center disc is where Sunshine places its MintMark SI, a patented anti-counterfeiting feature. It holds a hidden image that shows only through Sunshine’s decoder lens, which is sold separately. The assay card carries a matching MintMark SI seal in its lower corner. A hidden image is much harder to fake than a stamp.
The Card and the Company
The front of the card shows the SMI logo for Sunshine Minting, Inc. and states that its quality management system is certified to ISO 9001:2008 by DNV. The back reads CERTIFIED BY SUNSHINE MINTING, INC., with the fineness as .9999 Au, the weight as 5 grams, and MADE IN THE USA. Sunshine has supplied the mint industry since 1979, and in 2025 it moved its headquarters from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to Henderson, Nevada. Made in the USA, as the card says.

Each bar holds 5 grams, or 0.16075 troy ounces, of .9999 fine gold and measures 22 by 17 mm, 1.3 mm thick, with a smooth edge. It is serialized and sold new in its assay card. 22 by 17 mm, smaller than a postage stamp. Full current details are on the Specifications tab.

How do I check the MintMark SI?
Hold a Sunshine decoder lens over the round disc on the back of the bar. The hidden image appears only through the lens. The lens is sold separately and does not come with the bar.
Where is the serial number?
The serial is stamped on the front of the bar, in the panel under the weight, where it shows through the card window. The card itself certifies the fineness and weight. Stamped on the bar, below 5 GRAMS.
Who makes Sunshine bars?
Sunshine Minting, Inc., a private company that has supplied the mint industry since 1979 and is known for making silver planchets for the U.S. Mint. It is now based in Henderson, Nevada. Sunshine Minting, Inc., made in the USA.
Does a 5 gram bar cost more per ounce than a 1 oz bar?
Yes. Making, numbering and carding a small bar costs nearly as much as a large one, and that cost is spread over about a sixth of an ounce of gold. Expect a higher premium per ounce than on the Sunshine 1 oz bar.
Should I open the assay card?
There is no need to. The bar shows through the window on both sides, including the disc for the decoder lens, and a sealed card is the simplest thing to resell. Leave it sealed unless you have a reason not to.
