The Buffalo Nickel, Recast as One Ounce of Silver
The SilverTowne Buffalo 1 oz Silver Bar is one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, minted by SilverTowne in Winchester, Indiana, and stamped with both sides of the old Buffalo nickel. It is a thin, flat bar that ships new, sized to stack in a row of single ounces.
Portrait Above, Bison Behind
The front sets the Native American portrait inside a round frame near the top of the bar, facing right with LIBERTY along the edge of the frame, and the weight and purity stamped in plain capitals below. On the back the bison stands on a low mound inside its own round frame, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arched over it, and a crisscross diamond pattern fills the rest of the bar from edge to edge. Both designs are modeled on the Buffalo nickel the US Mint struck from 1913 to 1938.
Made in Winchester Since 1973
SilverTowne started in 1949 as Leon Hendrickson’s coin business in Winchester, Indiana, and the SilverTowne Mint has been making silver bullion there since 1973. This bar is struck at that mint, which is also where the larger SilverTowne Buffalo bars come from.
A Private Bar With a Famous Face
The design comes from a US coin, but this is a privately minted bar. No government issues it and it carries no denomination, so its value is the silver. One ounce is the most flexible size to hold, since you can sell a single bar at a time, and the premium per ounce on 1 oz bars is usually higher than on larger sizes.
