SilverTowne has been minting silver in Winchester, Indiana since 1949, and the Buffalo design is the one collectors associate with the name. This bar carries five troy ounces of .999 fine silver and reproduces both faces of James Earle Fraser’s 1913 Buffalo Nickel in raised medallion form. Five-ounce bars sit in a useful middle ground for stackers: enough weight to move the needle, small enough to divide a position without committing to a full kilo.

Key Features:

  • Purity and Weight: Five troy ounces of .999 fine silver
  • Metal: Silver, struck by SilverTowne Mint
  • Obverse: Native American profile portrait in a raised medallion above the weight and purity stamps
  • Reverse: American bison in a raised medallion set against a full diamond crosshatch field

The obverse places a circular medallion in the upper half of the bar carrying the right-facing Native American portrait from Fraser’s nickel. Long hair falls past the jaw and is bound at the base with a wrapped braid, with two feathers angling back from the crown and LIBERTY stamped along the medallion’s right edge. Below the medallion, the specifications run in four stacked lines across a plain polished field: .999, FINE SILVER, FIVE, and TROY OUNCES. A raised border frames the bar on all sides.

The reverse gives the design more room to work. A second circular medallion near the top holds the American bison in left-facing profile, standing on a raised mound with UNITED-STATES-OF-AMERICA arcing above and E PLURIBUS UNUM in the upper right. The animal’s shaggy forequarters and shoulder hump are heavily textured against smoother hindquarters. Surrounding the medallion, a diamond crosshatch pattern covers the entire remaining surface edge to edge, catching light at shifting angles and leaving no blank area where tampering could hide.

The bar ships new in a protective plastic sleeve. Corners are square and the edges are cleanly finished, so bars stack flat without rocking.
