This is 5 grams of .9999 gold, struck by the Perth Mint and sealed in a serial-numbered assay card. It is about a sixth of a troy ounce, one of the smallest gold bars that still ships with full mint certification.

The Perth Mint

The Perth Mint is Australia’s government mint, founded in 1899 and owned by the state of Western Australia. Its swan hallmark is one of the most recognized marks in gold. The bar leads with that swan over three stamped lines, 99.99% PURE GOLD 5 GRAM, and the back is tiled with leaping kangaroos. It is sealed in the mint’s black CertiCard with a matching serial number printed on the card.

The mint spends nearly as much cutting dies, striking and certifying a small bar as a large one, and that cost spreads across less gold. For a bar this valuable in a package this small, keep the seal intact if you can. The card, its serial number and the tamper-evident case are how a buyer verifies it without opening anything. Break the seal and resale gets slower and the offer usually softer.

Five grams, which is 0.161 troy ounces, at 99.99 percent purity. That is close to a sixth of a full troy ounce.

Why does a 5 gram bar cost more per gram than a 1 oz bar?

The cost of making and certifying a bar barely changes with its size, so on a small bar that fixed cost is spread over less metal. Every fractional gold product, from any mint, carries a higher premium per ounce than the one ounce version.

Should I keep it sealed in the assay card?

Yes, if you can. The card, the serial number and the tamper-evident case are what a future buyer checks. Taking the bar out does not change the gold, but it makes resale slower and can cost you on the offer.
