Popular Mexican Mint Products

The most renowned series to come out of the Mexican Mint is the Libertad collection. Each coin depicts the Angel of Independence, a historic statue located in Mexico City, on the reverse, as well as the Mexican coat of arms on the obverse.

Aside from the Libertad collection, The Casa de Moneda de México also historically produced Gold Peso coins, which tend to be popular among collectors of circulating gold.

Here’s a breakdown of the most popular Mexican Mint gold and silver products on the market today:

  • Mexican Silver Libertad Coin. Featuring a range of available weights and limited mintages compared to other world silver coins, the Mexican Silver Libertad is the flagship silver coin of the Mexican Mint. The 99.9% pure coin’s obverse depicts the Mexican national coat of arms. On the reverse, find the Angel of Independence, an iconic statue located in Mexico City, in front of two volcanoes. Investors love the Mexican Silver Libertad because of its unique combination of collectable appeal and bullion recognizability.
  • Mexican Gold Libertad Coin. The Mexican Gold Libertad is the official gold bullion coin of Mexico. Minted with 99.9% pure gold, the coin is available in multiple weights, and mintages are generally capped lower than most other sovereign gold bullion coins. On this coin, the obverse depicts the coat of arms of Mexico. The reverse side shows the Angel of Independence in front of two famous Mexican volcanoes.
  • Mexican Gold Peso Coin. With designs varying by denomination, the Mexican Gold Peso is the coin of choice for investors who prefer vintage circulated gold. Coins typically feature a version of the Mexican coat of arms, with designs changing based on denomination. These coins were minted from 1905 until 1959, and modern restrikes entered the market throughout the 20th century.

Mexican gold and silver coins are popular for several reasons. Most notably, the Mexican Mint’s production figures are sporadic and lower than most other national mints. Producing a number of key dates in the gold and silver Libertad collections, the Mexican Mint has helped spawn a massive community of dedicated collectors for its coinage.

About the Mexican Mint

The Casa de Moneda de México was founded in 1535, making it North America’s oldest mint. In fact, the Mexican Mint actually predates the country of Mexico by almost 300 years. For centuries, the mint was located atop the former home of an Aztec Emperor. The mint moved to its current location in 1983, with officials turning the former mint facility into a museum.

Mexico’s gold and silver coins were essential to the functioning of the United States economy during its formative years, with the Mexican currency known as 8 reales being designated legal tender within the United States for decades as American currency worked to gain its footing.

In the 20th century, the gold peso made its debut, becoming a popular coin traded all around North America.

Mexican Gold Libertad production was suspended in 2025, while BU silver numbers dropped to near-zero.

The Mexican Libertad Series

The Mexican Libertad series debuted in 1981, making it one of the oldest sovereign gold bullion coins minted in the modern era. It was followed in 1982 by the Mexican Silver Libertad, and both coins became highly popular among investors due to their intricate designs, consistent purity, and recognizability.

In more recent years, gold and silver Libertad coins have become a hot commodity among collectors. The Mexican Mint produces far fewer of its flagship coins than we see minted in other popular series, such as the American Eagle or Canadian Maple collections. As a result, sets of both the gold and silver versions of the Libertad can be both challenging and rewarding for collectors to build.

2025 was a “black swan” event for the Mexican Libertad series. That year, Banco de México released only an extremely limited number of Libertad coins in silver, with gold production being suspended entirely. Only 300-500 BU 1 oz Silver Libertad coins were minted. Today, these coins sell for record-breaking prices at auction due to their scarcity.

Why Buy Mexican Silver and Gold?

Unlike most world bullion coins, the Mexican Mint’s gold and silver coins are traded for a combination of their bullion content and their collectability. Limited annual mintages across the Libertad series have created numerous key dates, all of which command substantial premiums over melt value.

Even relatively high-mintage years sell at large premiums, due to both the popularity of the Libertad series and the collection’s low mintages compared to other sovereign gold and silver bullion coins.

Rather than a stacking play, Mexican Mint gold and silver coins tend to offer investors the chance to stack modern bullion coins that are also valuable to collectors. These coins can increase in value over time as the available supply is gobbled up by dedicated collectors, even if the spot price of gold or silver stagnates.
