A Tenth-Ounce Silver Libertad

The 2023 1/10 oz Mexican Silver Libertad is a tenth of a troy ounce of .999 fine silver from Mexico’s national mint, 20 mm across. It’s the full Libertad design, the Winged Victory and the national arms, on a coin about the size of a US nickel.

 

Victory on a Tenth of an Ounce

One side carries the Winged Victory, the figure from the Independence monument in Mexico City, with the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl behind her. Around her, the inscription reads 1/10 ONZA PLATA PURA and 2023 LEY .999: a tenth of an ounce, pure silver, the year and the fineness, all in Spanish.

 

The National Arms

The other side shows Mexico’s coat of arms as it stands today: an eagle on a prickly pear cactus, a serpent in its beak, with oak and laurel branches curving up below. ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arcs across the top, and a stepped border runs just inside the reeded edge.

 

Why a Tenth Costs More per Ounce

A tenth of an ounce costs more per ounce than a full ounce does. The mint spends nearly as much striking a small coin as a large one, and that cost gets spread across less silver.
