The Golden State Mint Buffalo

The GSM Buffalo 1 oz Silver Round is one troy ounce of .999 fine silver carrying both faces of the 1913 Buffalo nickel, struck by Golden State Mint. Golden State Mint says it has minted it daily since 1981, which makes this a design with more than four decades of continuous production behind it.

The Nickel at Silver-Dollar Size

The U.S. Mint issued James Earle Fraser’s Buffalo nickel from 1913 through 1938, and Golden State Mint’s round enlarges both of his designs to about 39 mm. The Native American portrait fills the front almost edge to edge, two feathers angled back from the hair and a wrapped braid at the jaw, with LIBERTY at the upper right. On the back, the bison stands head down on a raised mound, with GOLDEN STATE MINT arched above and 1 TROY OZ .999 SILVER below. No date on either side, so every round looks the same whatever year it was struck.

A Mint Since 1974

Golden State Mint was founded in 1974 and is based in Sanford, Florida, and it strikes rounds, bars and coins in silver, gold and copper. A full Buffalo range sits behind this round: the same design comes in sizes from fractional rounds up to five ounces and in copper as well as silver.

A Round, Not a Coin

The design belongs to a U.S. coin, but this is a privately minted round. No government issues it and no denomination appears on it, so it is valued for its ounce of silver. Buffalo design, private round, priced as bullion rather than as the government-issued Gold Buffalo or the old nickel itself.
