The obverse presents the right-facing Native American portrait from Fraser’s nickel, a composite drawn from several tribal leaders rather than a single sitter. Long hair falls past the jaw and is bound at the base with a wrapped braid, with two feathers angling back from the crown, their individual barbs cut as separate lines. The face is struck in deep relief, with the brow, cheekbone, and set jaw each standing well clear of the field. LIBERTY is stamped along the upper right rim. A finely toothed border rings the design.

The reverse shows the American bison in left-facing profile, standing on a raised ground line that runs the width of the design. Its shoulder hump and shaggy forequarters are heavily textured against the smoother hindquarters, the head lowered with horns curving forward and the tail hanging straight. GOLDEN STATE MINT arcs across the top inside the border, and the base carries 1 TROY OZ over .999 SILVER in two stacked lines.
