Audax, the Privateer
She stands at a table on deck in a tricorn hat, a lantern burning at her side and ships under sail behind her in rough water. Goldback, Inc. drew her from the tales of two women who went to sea, Anne Bonny, the Irish-born pirate of the early 1700s, and Charlotte de Berry, a sailor of legend often linked to Florida. Her motto runs across the lower part of the note: “Bravery conquers the unknown.”
Read the Table and the Rigging
Every object in the scene was picked for a reason. On the table, a compass rose and a navigational divider stand for planning, the careful half of daring, and the lantern stands for guidance through the dark. The pendant at her throat is a piece of eight, a nod to the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet that a hurricane sank off Florida’s coast. The flag above the ships is drawn from one of the earliest pirate flags, and the choppy sea is a reminder that Florida has always had its hurricanes.
Pirate or Privateer
Goldback, Inc. calls her a privateer on purpose. Privateers sailed with a government’s approval, which set them apart from pirates who answered to no one, and Florida’s coves and reefs saw plenty of both in the 17th and 18th centuries. Audax is daring with a license, not lawless.
