One Goldback, One Thousandth of an Ounce
The 1 Florida Goldback is the base unit of Goldback, Inc.’s Florida series: a gold note holding 1/1000th of a troy ounce of 24 karat gold. Every other Goldback is counted against it, so a 5 holds five thousandths and a 1/2 holds half of one. The Florida One carries Harmonia, the virtue of Harmony, in a scene built around Florida’s Spanish colonial past. The note in the photo is dated 2025.
Harmonia in St. Augustine
Harmonia appears as a Spanish settler with a guitar across her lap, cross-shaped earrings marking the Catholic faith the settlers brought with them. Behind her stands the Castillo de San Marcos, built between 1672 and 1695 to guard St. Augustine, the city Spain founded in 1565, and a Spanish galleon sails offshore. The details are all Florida: a sabal palm, the state tree; an orange tree with its blossom, the state fruit and flower, for a city believed to have grown Florida’s first oranges; and a flamingo at her side. The motto beneath reads “Honor in Discovery.”
Terra Incognita
Look closely at the guitar and it is engraved TERRA INCOGNITA, “unknown land,” one of the earliest names Europeans gave to Florida. A small inscription that sums up the note: Goldback, Inc. calls the scene a tribute to settlers who entered uncharted territory and built a life in harmony with it.
Spending a Gold Note
A Goldback is printed NEGOTIABLE INSTRUMENT and states that Goldback, Inc. will exchange it for U.S. gold coin. It is privately issued, not U.S. legal tender, and businesses in the Goldback merchant network accept it in trade. Priced at Goldback’s own rate, the note trades at Goldback, Inc.’s published daily exchange rate rather than the melt value of a thousandth of an ounce, which puts it well above its gold content. Buy it to spend, give or collect, not to get the most gold per dollar.
