- Obverse side had image of Victoria holding wheat and an American flag
- Reverse is mirror image of the image on the front
In 2011 the Utah Legal Tender Act was passed. The purpose of this act was to make gold and silver coins legal tender. Shortly after this happened the Utah goldbacks were created which are ‘voluntary tender’. These bills contain a portion of gold made into a gold foil sandwiched in between sheets of durable polyester. The result is a more manageable way to pay in gold for goods and services. Merchants and vendors don’t have to accept the bills as payment but many welcome them since they actually have gold in it. Throughout Utah there are signs advertising ‘We accept goldbacks”.
On the obverse of the bill is the image of Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory as a suffragette. Here she is holding wheat in one had and an American flag on a short pole in her left hand. She is shown here in honor of Utah’s place in women’t right to vote. Utah granted women the right before Utah was even a state. Victoria has a ribbon across her chest commemorating the date ‘Votes Counting Since 1870’.
The reverse is a mirror image of the front of the bill. The bill is so thin that you can see the image through the back giving it the mirrored look.
Be sure to get your 25 Utah Goldback Note and own a piece of history as well as piece of modern currency. At the same time, appreciate that this bill actually has gold in it.
