Two Signatures on One Coin
Both designers left their mark on this coin, and you can find them with the naked eye. Turn to the reverse and NATHAN is lettered in small capitals beneath Britannia’s feet, for Philip Nathan, whose Britannia dates to the 1987 gold coin. On the obverse, the initials MJ sit just below the truncation of the King’s neck, for Martin Jennings, the sculptor of the official coinage portrait of Charles III. The King faces left, uncrowned, inside the legend CHARLES III D G REX F D 2 POUNDS.
What You Can See Without a Loupe
Britannia strides across the reverse with her gown and hair streaming behind her, a trident held upright and a shield bearing the Union flag at her side. Behind her, the field is textured rather than polished. Low on the left sits a small round disc, the coin’s latent image, where a trident turns into a padlock as you tilt the coin. BRITANNIA 2025, 1 oz and 999 FINE SILVER run around the rim, and the edge is reeded all the way round. The Royal Mint adds three more security features, including micro-text and tincture lines, but these are the ones you will notice first.
Bullion Quality, Not Proof
The Royal Mint strikes this coin to its bullion standard, the quality made for stacking, not the mirror finish of a proof. Coins come from Royal Mint tubes, and light contact marks from minting and packing are normal at this standard. Expect a bright, sharp coin rather than a flawless one. If perfect surfaces matter to you, a proof or a graded coin is a different purchase.
