Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the Double Eagle at Theodore Roosevelt’s direct request, and the result is widely considered the high point of American coinage. An About Uncirculated example gives you a coin that saw only brief circulation, retaining nearly all of its original detail and much of its mint luster. Each carries 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, and the AU grade lands in a practical spot between worn circulated pieces and the certified Mint State coins that command real collector premiums.
Key Features:
- Purity and Weight: 90% gold, 33.436 grams gross, 0.9675 oz actual gold weight
- Metal: Gold alloyed with copper for circulation durability
- Obverse: Liberty striding forward with torch and olive branch against a sunburst
- Reverse: An eagle in flight above a rising sun
The obverse carries the full-length figure of Liberty, moving toward the viewer with her right arm raised and a torch held high, an olive branch gathered in her left hand. Her gown falls in deep folds and streams behind her, and her hair blows loose across her shoulders. Rays fan out from a rising sun at the base, with the Capitol dome rendered in miniature at the lower left. LIBERTY arcs across the top, stars run down both sides, and the date sits at the lower right. On an AU coin, wear shows only on the highest points, typically Liberty’s breast, knee, and the tips of the sun rays.
The reverse shows a bald eagle in flight, wings extended fully forward and body angled downward, sweeping across sun rays that rise from the lower rim. Individual flight feathers are laid in overlapping rows. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the upper edge with TWENTY DOLLARS below it, and IN GOD WE TRUST sits along the base.
Coins are sold as random dates from the 1907 to 1933 series, selected from available inventory, and arrive uncertified with light contact marks consistent with the grade.
