A Quarter Ounce of Philharmonic Gold, Any Year
This is the 1/4 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic with the date left to us: one quarter troy ounce of .9999 fine gold from the Austrian Mint, pulled from whatever years we have in stock. Every year holds the same gold, 7.776 grams at four nines, under the same Great Organ and orchestra design. If the date doesn’t matter to you, this is the listing for it.
Schillings or Euros
The quarter ounce has been part of the Philharmonic series since 1989, and its face value tells you roughly when your coin was struck. Coins from before 2002 carry a 500 schilling face value, from the years when Austria still used the schilling. From 2002, when Austria adopted the euro, the same coin reads 25 EURO. A random-year order can bring either one, with identical gold content.
The Organ and the Orchestra
Thomas Pesendorfer designed both sides, and the design has stayed the same since 1989. One side shows the Great Organ in the Golden Hall of Vienna’s Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic, under REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH, with the weight, purity, year and face value below. The other side gathers the orchestra: a cello at the center, violins fanned out on either side, a harp behind on the right and a Vienna horn and bassoon at the upper left, all under WIENER PHILHARMONIKER.
What a Random Year Means
We choose the date from stock, and it cannot be requested. Our Specifications tab lists these coins as Brilliant Uncirculated, and at .9999 the gold is soft, so light contact marks from tubes and handling are normal. A quarter ounce also costs more per ounce than a full ounce, as every fractional coin does. Buy it for gold in smaller pieces, not for the lowest cost per ounce.
