Austria’s Vienna Philharmonic has been Europe’s benchmark gold bullion coin since 1989, and it remains the only one denominated in euros. The design honors the orchestra that shares its name, and the coin has topped European sales charts repeatedly over the past three decades. Each piece contains one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold struck by the Austrian Mint in Vienna, with a €100 face value and legal tender status across the eurozone.
Key Features:
- Purity and Weight: 1 troy ounce (31.103 grams) of .9999 fine gold (99.99% pure)
- Metal Type: 24-karat gold, struck by the Austrian Mint
- Obverse Design: The Great Organ of the Vienna Musikverein
- Reverse Design: Assembled orchestral instruments
The obverse presents the pipe organ from the Musikverein’s Golden Hall, home of the Vienna Philharmonic. The engraving captures the ranked pipes behind the ornate case front, with carved pediment figures above and decorative scrollwork along the base. REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH arcs across the top rim in the coin’s distinctive lettering. Below the organ, the coin is stamped 1 UNZE GOLD 999.9 and 100 EURO.
The reverse gathers instruments from the orchestra into a single composition: a cello centered at the front, flanked by four violins, with a Vienna horn, a bassoon, and a harp rising behind them. Each is drawn with working detail, from the harp’s string course to the horn’s coiled tubing and valve keys. WIENER PHILHARMONIKER curves across the top. Thomas Pesendorfer, the Austrian Mint’s chief engraver, designed both sides.
The coin measures 37 mm across and roughly 2 mm thick, with a reeded edge. Brilliant Uncirculated pieces arrive bright and fully struck. Coins ship in protective flips or mint tubes depending on quantity, and the issue year is dealer’s choice unless a specific date is listed.
Four-nine purity, a government mint behind it, and deep liquidity across both European and U.S. markets make this one of the easiest one-ounce gold coins to buy and resell. The premium typically runs close to that of the Maple Leaf and Britannia. Order yours today and we will ship it insured in discreet packaging.

This and the 3/4 oz Kennedy half-dollar size gold coin I choose to collect (different Austria dates so IRS can’t say I’m stacking. I will claim I’m just a collector, if need be). I only wish the Philharmonic were a shiny coin. Otherwise, its
design and detail are very appealing.
