One Ounce Under Weinman’s Walking Liberty

The Walking Liberty 1 oz Silver Bar is the one-ounce size of Highland Mint’s Walking Liberty bar: one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, with Adolph Weinman’s striding Liberty in a medallion on the front and a diagonal diamond pattern on the back. It is made in the United States by Highland Mint of Melbourne, Florida.

 

The Sculptor Behind the Design

Adolph Alexander Weinman was born in 1870 in Durmersheim, near Karlsruhe in Germany, and came to the United States in 1885 at the age of 14. He took evening classes at Cooper Union and later studied at the Art Students League of New York with Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Though he is best remembered for his coins and medals, Weinman thought of himself as an architectural sculptor, and his work is on the Jefferson Memorial and inside the US Supreme Court. The Walking Liberty is his design for the half dollar.

 

What Is Stamped on the Bar

At the top of the face, Liberty walks toward the rising sun inside a round medallion, the flag across her shoulders and IN GOD WE TRUST in the field beside her. Below the medallion a large numeral 1 fills the center, with ONE TROY OUNCE above and FINE SILVER 999+ below, and MADE IN USA in a panel near the base. The reverse is covered in a diagonal diamond pattern with no lettering.

 

A Private Bar, Priced on Its Silver

The medallion borrows a coin design, but the bar is not a coin. Highland Mint is a private mint, so the bar has no denomination, no date and no government issuer, and it trades on its silver. At one ounce a bar, you can add them to a stack one at a time.

Is this the same design as the 5 oz and 10 oz Walking Liberty bars?

The layout matches, with the medallion on top and the diamond pattern on the back. The large numeral changes with the weight, so this bar carries a 1.

 

Who makes the bar?

Highland Mint, a private mint in Melbourne, Florida, established in the early 1980s. It handles design, sculpting and die making in house.

 

Is the Walking Liberty 1 oz bar IRA eligible?
