The Valcambi 10 oz Gold Bar holds 10 troy ounces of .9999 fine gold, minted in Balerna, Switzerland by Valcambi, a refiner that has been at it since 1961. It ships new in Valcambi’s own capsule with a serial numbered certificate, and the number on the card matches the number on the bar.

Minted, Not Poured

Valcambi makes this bar by cutting it from rolled gold sheet and striking it, the way coins are made, rather than pouring it into a mold. That gives it squared lines and a bright, even surface on both sides. The front carries Valcambi’s faceted diamond logo above three lines of serif type, 10 oz, fine gold and 999,9, then the CHI ESSAYEUR FONDEUR mark and the bar’s own serial number. The back carries the valcambi suisse name in large lettering running up the bar. Every bar is serialized, two letters followed by six digits.

The Certificate and Why It Has No Signature

The bar sits in a clear capsule with a small certificate showing the weight, the fineness, Valcambi’s assayer mark and the serial number. Valcambi’s assayer and melter licences are issued to the company rather than to one person, so the certificate carries no signature, and it does not need one. The hallmark replaces a signature, stamped on the bar itself.

Why 10 oz Is a Popular Size

Ten ounces is where a gold buyer gets a lower premium per ounce than on single ounces while still holding a piece that fits in the palm of a hand and sells easily. It is also a big step up in value from a 1 oz bar, so selling part of it is not an option. Ten ounces sells whole, which is why many stackers mix 10 oz bars with smaller ones. Yes. It is .9999 fine gold from a Swiss refiner, which places it well clear of the .995 fineness minimum for gold in a precious metals IRA. IRA eligible, through your custodian.

Should I take the bar out of its capsule?

You can, but there is little reason to. The capsule protects the surface from scratches and fingerprints, and a bar still sealed with its matching certificate is the simplest thing to resell. Keep it sealed unless you have a reason not to.

Why is there no signature on the certificate?

Valcambi holds its assayer and melter licences as a company, not through a named assayer, so none of its certificates are signed. The assayer mark on the card and on the bar does that job. No signature is normal for Valcambi.

How do I check that the bar is genuine?

Match the serial number on the bar to the number on the certificate. The bar should also weigh 10 troy ounces, or 311.03 grams. Matching serials, correct weight, and the bar is what it says.

Is this bar minted or cast?
