The US Mint 1 oz Gold Commemorative Arts Medals were released to compete with the South African Gold Krugerrands. They ran from 1980-1984. Each design honored an American whose contributions to the arts were significant.
In 1980 that was Grant Wood and his portrait was on one side while his famous painting, ‘American Gothic’ was depicted on the other.
In 1981, Mark Twain was honored with his portrait on the obverse side and a scene from his book, ‘Huckleberry Finn’ featured on the reverse of the medal.
The 1982 medal was devoted to Louis Armstrong. The obverse side had the image of Mr. Armstrong while the reverse has his trumpet, ‘Ambassador of Jazz’, and a snippet from one of his songs.
Robert Frost is the subject of the 1983’s medal with his picture on the obverse and part of his most famous poem, ‘The Road Less Traveled’ on the reverse.
The actress, Helen Hayes was featured in the 1984 medal. Her portrait is on the obverse while the tragedy and comedy masks are on the reverse. Above the masks is ‘The First Lady of the Stage’.
