The Swiss 20 Franc Helvetia, known to collectors as the Vreneli, is one of the most affordable ways to own European gold with genuine circulation history. Each coin holds 0.1867 troy ounces of pure gold in a compact size that trades easily and stores without bulk. Switzerland struck these in large numbers, which keeps premiums low and supply steady.

Key Features:

  • Purity & Weight: 90% gold, 6.45 grams gross, 0.1867 oz AGW
  • Metal: Gold alloyed with copper for durability
  • Obverse: Bust of Helvetia against the Swiss Alps
  • Reverse: Swiss shield framed by oak branches with denomination and date

The obverse presents a young woman in left profile, her hair worked into a thick braid that falls over the shoulder with loose curls at the front. A garland of small flowers rests at her collar. Behind her the artist cut a low range of Alpine peaks across the field. HELVETIA arcs along the upper rim, and the designer’s signature sits at the lower right.

The reverse centers on the Swiss coat of arms, a shield with a bold cross set against vertical hatching. Oak branches heavy with leaves and acorns wrap the shield on both sides, tied at the top with a ribbon that trails down each flank. 20 and FR flank the shield at the widest point. The date runs across the bottom with the B mintmark beside it, marking the Bern Mint.

Designer Fritz Ulysse Landry modeled the portrait in 1895, and the coin entered production in 1897. The series continued to 1949 with 58.6 million pieces struck overall. Swiss collectors nicknamed it Vreneli after the model’s supposed name, and it remains one of the most familiar gold coins in Europe.

These measure 21 mm in diameter with a reeded edge. Coins are sold in circulated condition, typically showing light wear on the high points of the braid and shield while retaining full detail and original color. Dates vary with inventory.

Small, liquid, and priced near its metal, the Vreneli suits both first-time gold buyers and anyone diversifying into world coins. Order your Swiss 20 Franc Helvetia today.
