There have been many different designs for the Swiss franc but one of the most popular designs was the Helvetia design also known as the Vreneli range. Though a variation of this design with a crowned Helvetia appeared in the late 1880’s this design with an uncrowned Helvetia appeared in 1897 and ran until 1935. It was brought back in 1947 and 1949. This coin offered here can be from any of these years.

On the obverse is a portrait of Helvetia, the female personification of Switzerland. She appears here with her hair in braids. Behind her are the Swiss Alps. This design was provided by Friz Ulysse Landry in 1895 and quickly became a popular design. Above her is ‘HELVETIA’. Underneath her portrait is Landry’s signature.
The reverse side of this coin has the coat of arms of Switzerland. They consist of the national shield with the swiss cross in the center. This cross is traditional to Switzerland and represents their belief in Christianity and has come to symbolize freedom, honor, and loyalty. Behind the shield are oak leaves. To the right of the shield is ‘20’ and to the left is ‘FR’ for francs. At the bottom of the coin is the year of issue ranging from 1897-1935 or 1947 or 1949.
