One Hundred Ounces, Minted With a Hidden Mark
The Sunshine Mint 100 oz Silver Bar holds 100 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, made by Sunshine Minting, Inc., the company known for supplying silver planchets to the United States Mint. It is a minted bar with a design struck on both sides, and it carries the same hidden security mark Sunshine puts on its smallest gold bars.
Scrambled Indicia
The round disc at the center of the back is Sunshine’s Mint Mark SI. The SI stands for Scrambled Indicia: a micro-engraving that Sunshine says is only visible through its Mint Mark SI decoding lens. Sunshine applies the feature to all of its own-brand bullion, so a 100 oz bar gets the same check as a 5 gram one. The decoding lens is sold separately.
Eagle on the Front, Sunbursts on the Back
The front carries Sunshine’s round emblem, an eagle with spread wings over a rising sun, ringed by SUNSHINE MINTING. Below it the bar is stamped .999 FINE, SILVER and 100 OUNCES above a recessed panel near the base. The back is covered in diagonal rows of sunbursts around the Mint Mark SI disc. At 30.4 mm thick, it is a solid, heavy block of silver.
What a Big Bar Is For
A 100 oz bar spreads the cost of making it across a lot of silver, so it usually costs less per ounce than smaller bars or coins. The tradeoff is that it sells as one piece. If you may want to sell part of your silver later, smaller bars give you more ways to split it. New bars of this size can show light toning or handling marks, which do not change the silver content.
