This design is highly detailed and it is evident the artist painstakingly captured every detail of the founder’s likeness. Here you can see everything from the frilly lace on his collar to his trademark hairstyle. Around the outside of the coin is ‘EENDRAG MAAK MAG’ which is Afrikaans. Right next to it is the English translation ‘UNITY IS STRENGTH’.
On the reverse side of the coin is a Springbok Antelope bounding across the fields. This antelope is commonly seen in the African savanna. Above the image is ‘SUID AFRIKA’ which is Afrikaans for ‘SOUTH AFRICA’ which is next. In between these words is the year of issuance. At the bottom of the coin is ‘2R’ for 2 Rand.
