History of the Perth Mint Gold Bar

Australian gold was originally discovered in Coolgardie in 1892 and Kalgoorlie in 1893. Both locations are towns in Western Australia and in close proximity to the state’s capital of Perth.

Miners quickly began bringing their fresh findings to the newly established Perth Mint. Gold bullion was first produced at the Mint in 1899, while still being under the jurisdiction of the British Royal Mint.

The Perth Mint became its own entity in July of 1970. From 1899 through 1931, the Mint struck more than 106 million gold sovereigns and 735,000 half sovereigns. Today, gold bars are made in a state of the art facility that is next door to the original limestone structure where it all began.

The Perth Mint has rightfully earned its status as one of the most elite and trustworthy mints in the world, creating a number of renowned masterpieces that are coveted amongst both collectors and investors.

Design of the Perth Mint Gold Bar

The obverse of each Perth Mint Gold Bar pays tribute to Mint itself, featuring its iconic logo. The emblem, a swan, is encircled by “The Perth Mint” and “Australia”. The swan has long been a Western Australian symbol and acts as the state’s national bird. It appears on the Coat of Arms and other illustrations and symbols within state institutions.

Seeing the swan on any given piece of gold bullion is an almost sure indication that you’ve purchased a product from the Perth Mint. The purity and weight are inscribed below.

The reverse image is simply a repeated, diagonal pattern of Australia’s national animal, the kangaroo. Each kangaroo has a deep, mirrored finish, which makes for a stunning contrast against the frosted background of the bar itself.
