The sheer size of the tomb and its contents were very unusual and puzzling at first. It was later discovered this was the tomb of the First Emperor of China and the clay warriors and their chariots and horses were there to protect him in the afterlife. The First Emperor of China, Kin Shi Huang, ruled during the 3rd Century BC.
