Five Pesos at Half the Old Weight

The Mexican 5 Peso is a 19 mm gold coin from the Mexico City mint, weighing 4.1666 grams at .900 fine. That leaves 0.1206 troy ounces of pure gold, just under an eighth of an ounce. When this coin arrived in 1905, it weighed half as much as the “balance scale” 5 pesos Mexico had struck since 1870.

A Short Run, Then 1955

The Mexico City mint struck the 5 peso in only a handful of years: 1905 to 1907, 1910, 1918 to 1920, and 1955. The Mexican government later restruck the coin in large quantities with the 1955 date, which is why that year is the one most buyers know. Every coin carries the M mint mark of Mexico City, the only mint striking Mexican coins after 1905.

Hidalgo, the Eagle and the Edge

One side carries Albino del Moral’s portrait of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla facing left, with CINCO PESOS, the M mint mark, a star and the date around him. The other side shows the Mexican national arms, an eagle on a cactus, under ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS. Turn the coin on its side and the edge is lettered INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD, independence and liberty.
