The obverse side of this coin has a very simple design. There are two laurel leaves framing ‘DOS PESOS’ written in the middle. This brings to mind the US Wheat penny. At the top is the year of issue. At the bottom is an ‘M’, the Banco de Mexico mintmark.
On the reverse side of the coin is Mexico’s National Coat of Arms. This image recreates the scene the Aztecs came upon where they witnessed a Mexican Gold Eagle with a rattlesnake in its mouth. They believed this was a sign that told them this was where they needed to build their great city. That city became Mexico City. Here is the eagle standing on a cactus using its beak and claws to subdue the snake. Above the image is ‘ESTRADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS’ which means the United States of Mexico.
