A Longhorn Skull on Ten Ounces of Poured Silver

The Longhorn 10 oz Poured Silver Bar is a Hero Bullion bar: 10 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, poured rather than struck, with a longhorn skull stamped across the face. The horns sweep out to nearly the full width of the bar, with .999 SILVER above them, 10 on one side of the skull and OZT on the other.

 

The Breed Behind the Bar

The Texas Longhorn descends from cattle that Spanish conquistadors brought from the Iberian Peninsula, from the time of Columbus’s second voyage until about 1512. For hundreds of years the herds lived semi-wild on the rangelands. Over time the stock dwindled, and in 1927 enthusiasts from the US Forest Service saved it from near extinction with a small herd on the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma.

 

In 1995 the Texas Legislature named the Longhorn the state large mammal. The horns that give the breed its name can span more than eight feet from tip to tip, and the skull on this bar keeps that wide, upturned sweep.

 

What the Pour Leaves Behind

Poured silver cools in the mold on its own terms, so no two bars come out alike. The face carries soft ripples and faint flow lines around the stamp. The back is left as it cooled, with a frosted, pebbled texture, and the edges are rounded rather than machined square.

That process also leaves pits, small voids and the odd deeper mark, and on some bars the stamp loses detail where the silver settled unevenly, softening the line between an ear and a horn. The surface, the edge shape and where the stamp lands all vary from bar to bar. The silver content does not.

Why does my bar have pits or a rough patch?

Pits, voids and ripples are what happens when molten silver cools in an open mold. They are part of a poured bar, and they do not change the 10 troy ounces of silver it holds.

 

Will my bar look like the photos?

Not exactly. The photos show one bar, and yours will have its own texture, edge shape and stamp placement.

 

What does OZT mean on the bar?

OZT stands for troy ounces, the unit precious metals are weighed in. The 10 next to the skull and the OZT beside it read as 10 troy ounces.

 

How wide do real Longhorn horns grow?

Texas Longhorn horns can span more than eight feet from tip to tip. In 2022 Guinness recorded a steer named Poncho Via with a horn spread of 323.7 centimeters, about 127 inches.
