The Lincoln Wheat penny may not excite much by itself. But 5000 of them? Now that’s a party. It’s also a great way to add a quantity of copper to your portfolio. These coins date from 1909 to 1958 and come in big cloth canvas bag. There is a certain excitement that comes from going through a big bag of coins and looking to see what years you got or what mint marks.
Key features:

- Reverse features wheat design
- Combined face value of $50 is backed by the United States Government
The obverse side of the penny is the same design that has been on the penny since 1909. This is Victor David Brennar’s design which shows ‘Honest Abe’ facing right. Brennar really captures the stoic air of President Abraham Lincoln as he gazes off to the right. You can see the hairs in his beard and the contours of his cheek. Above the image is ‘In God We Trust’. To the left is ‘LIBERTY’. At the bottom right is the year the coin was issued. Some of the years had the mint mark on this side of the coin.
On the reverse side is the original wheat design which was featured on the penny until 1959 when the wheat design was replaced with the Lincoln Memorial design. Here we see ‘ONE CENT’ framed by two stalks of wheat perhaps in reference to the prosperity of the nation’s agriculture during this time. At the top is ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM’ the latin motto of the United States that means ‘From many, one’ referring to the melting pot nature of this country. Our people come from many different nations. Under ‘ONE CENT’ is ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’.
