Pratt’s 1908 Experiment

In 1908, sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt designed the Indian Head $2.50 and $5 gold pieces with the portrait and the eagle recessed below a flat field. The idea was to keep the surface level so coins would stack evenly, and critics of the day complained that the hollows would collect dirt. Those two gold coins remain America’s only recessed circulating coins, and this round reproduces the treatment in silver.

The obverse shows a Native American chief in left-facing profile wearing a full war bonnet, a braid falling in front of his shoulder, LIBERTY across the top and a ring of stars around the rim. The reverse carries a standing eagle perched on arrows with an olive branch beneath its talons. GOLDEN STATE MINT arcs across the top, E PLURIBUS UNUM sits on the left, IN GOD WE TRUST on the right, and 1 TROY OZ .999 FINE SILVER runs along the bottom rim. Because the relief is cut into the surface, the field stays flat.

A Private Round, Not the Gold Original

This is a private round struck by Golden State Mint. It carries no denomination and no government backing, and it is not one of Pratt’s gold coins. Collectors chase the originals for date and grade. This round is priced on its silver and enjoyed for the design, and its worth is the metal.

The finish is matte, so expect a soft frosted surface rather than a mirror shine. If you want bright, reflective silver, this is not that round. If you like the quieter look of a matte strike, it is one of the more distinctive faces you can add to a stack.

What does incuse mean?

Incuse means the design is pressed into the surface instead of standing above it. On this round the portrait, lettering and eagle are all recessed, and the field stays flat, which is the effect Pratt gave his 1908 gold coins.

Is this the same as the gold Indian Head coin?

No. Pratt’s Indian Head pieces were $2.50 and $5 gold coins from the US Mint. This is a private silver round from Golden State Mint that borrows the same treatment. They share a design, not a mint or a metal.

Is the finish shiny?

No. The finish is matte, so the surface looks soft and frosted rather than mirrored. Matte, not mirror-bright, is the look to expect.

Is the Incuse Indian round IRA eligible?
