The GSM Lincoln Wheat Cent 1 oz Silver Round is a tribute to one of the most coveted and controversial coins in the history of coin collecting, the ‘S-VDB Wheat Cent’. The Wheat Cent came out in 1909 to replace the Indian Head penny and let’s just say, it wasn’t well received. The issue was that the designer’s issues were pretty prominently displayed. Later these initials were removed. Because there were a relatively small number of these coins made, they are pretty rare and the GSM took this design and put it on .999 fine silver. This makes for a pretty cool round.
Key features:
- Made of 1 Troy Ounce of .999 fine silver
- Replica of the 1909 S-VDB Wheat Cent
- Obverse side of the round has the original design of the Lincoln Penny with Abraham Lincoln, ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’ above him, ‘LIBERTY’ to his left, and 1909. A small ‘S” is to the right to look like the San Francisco mint’s mark
- The reverse side of the round has ‘GOLDEN STATE MINT’ at the top and wheat stalks on the right and left. In the middle is ‘ONE TROY OZ .999 FINE SILVER’. At the bottom are the infamous initials ‘V.D.B.’
The obverse side of this round is a replica of the infamous S-V.D.B Wheat Penny. This penny came out to replace the retirement of the Indian Head Penny. This new design was met with controversy almost immediately when the public saw the initials of the designer, Victor David Brenner, V.D.B., prominently displayed on the reverse of the coin. There was so much of an outcry that they removed the initials in subsequent editions. The result was that only 484,000 were made and they were made from the San Francisco mint. It is believed that only 50,000 of these coins still exist today and they are highly coveted by collectors. This side has the image of Abraham Lincoln. Above his head is ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’. To his left is ‘LIBERTY’. To the right of the image is ‘1909’. Under the date is a small ‘S’ for the San Francisco Mint’s mark.
The reverse side of the round has ‘GOLDEN STATE MINT’ at the top. To the right and left are stalks of wheat like the wheat penny design. In the middle is ‘ONE TROY OZ .999 FINE SILVER’. At the bottom of the round are the initials ‘V.D.B.’
This GSM Lincoln Wheat Cent 1 oz Silver Round is a great homage to the coveted and controversial S-VDB Wheat Cent and represents a piece of history. Get yours today.
