The Prussian 20 Mark is one of Europe’s most enduring vintage gold coins, struck during the German Empire era and now trading as a recognized international bullion piece. Each coin contains .2304 troy oz of pure gold in a 90% gold alloy, placing it in the same weight class as the British Sovereign — compact, historically significant, and competitively priced relative to its gold content.

Key Features:

  • Gold content: .2304 troy oz of pure gold (7.965 grams total weight, 90% gold)
  • Composition: 90% gold, 10% copper
  • Obverse: Bareheaded right-facing portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm II; inscribed Wilhelm II Deutscher Kaiser König V. Preussen and mint mark A (Berlin Mint)
  • Reverse: The Imperial German Eagle with crowned shield on chest; inscribed Deutsches Reich, year of issue, and 20 Mark

The obverse carries a strong right-facing portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm II — the last German Emperor and King of Prussia — rendered without a crown or military dress, his features sharply defined against a plain field. The full imperial title arcs around the rim in Latin-abbreviated German, and the A mint mark of the Berlin Mint sits directly below the portrait. The strike is precise and firm, consistent with the high production standards of the Imperial German mints.

The reverse presents the Reichsadler — the Imperial Eagle — in a bold, spread-wing composition that fills most of the field. The eagle faces left, wings extended, with a detailed heraldic shield on its chest bearing the Hohenzollern quartered arms. A crown sits above the eagle’s head, and the denomination 20 Mark, the year, and Deutsches Reich arc around the rim. The design is dense and heraldically elaborate, one of the more detailed reverse compositions on any standard-issue gold coin of the era.

These coins were struck to a diameter of 22.5mm with a reeded edge. The 90% gold alloy gives them good resistance to wear, and many examples from the original production runs remain in solid circulated condition today. Year and specific strike will vary with available inventory; the mint mark A on the example shown indicates Berlin Mint production, though other mint marks may appear.
