Marianne Rooster design as this coin came to be called was issued in 1899 and was an instant hit among the French people. This design is the most famous design perhaps because people of all classes liked it. Due to its popularity, the Paris Mint used this design until 1914. Despite being made for 15 years, the 20 Franc Gold Coin is very hard to find in BU condition.
The reverse side of the coin is a portrait of Marianne. Marianne is the symbol of the French people like Lady Liberty is the symbol of the American people. This portrait was designed by artist J.C. Chaplain. Marianne represents Liberty and reason. Here she is facing right and wearing a wreath of leaves. Around her image is ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE’.
On the reverse side is the Gallic Rooster, another Symbol of France perhaps like Uncle Sam in the United States. The rooster symbolizes the country’s culture and rich history. Arched above the image of the rooster is ‘LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE’. To the left of the rooster’s feet is ‘20’ and to the right is ‘Fcs’. Below the image is the year of issue between 1899 and 1914.

I was very pleased with my new Gold Rooster. I went back to buy another one but they were all sold out… I’m keeping an eye out for when HB gets more in.
