The Eagle on the Face

An eagle comes down across the top of the bar with its wings raised high and its talons reaching forward, every feather set out in raised relief. Below it, the bar is stamped in three plain lines: 100 OUNCE, .9999 and FINE SILVER. Between the two sits open, rippled cast silver, left as the pour made it rather than polished flat.

 

Poured, So No Two Match

Cast bars are made by pouring molten silver into a mold and letting it cool. The surface is never perfectly even, so expect ripples, small pits, flow lines and brighter and duller patches across the same face. The back carries no design at all, only the raw texture of the cooled metal, and the edges round off softly where the silver settled. Yours will not match the photo exactly, and none of that changes the weight or the fineness stamped on the front.

Is this an American Silver Eagle?

No. The eagle here is the design on a privately made bar from Coin ‘N Things, not the U.S. Mint’s Silver Eagle coin. A bar, not a coin, and it sells on its silver content.

 

What does .9999 fine mean?

It means the bar is 99.99% pure silver. Many 100 oz bars, including the Asahi and Johnson Matthey bars we carry, are stamped .999, or 99.9%. One extra nine is a small difference in metal and a clear one on the stamp.

 

Why does my bar look different from the photo?

Every bar is poured separately, so the texture, the shine and the exact depth of the stamping change from one to the next. Small pits and flow lines are part of a cast bar. Surface marks are normal and are not damage.

 

How heavy is the Eagle 100 oz bar?
