On the obverse of this coin is a brilliant Don’t Tread On Me design as inspired by the Gadsden flag. The words ‘DON’T TREAD ON ME’ are at the top of the coin with a very detailed, striking, Timber rattlesnake. Underneath is ‘ESTABLISHED IN 1754’ referring to the date when the image of the rattlesnake first appeared in the colonies as a symbol of the colonies.
The reverse side has a proud looking eagle above which is written ‘THE PRICE OF LIBERTY’. This eagle is looking to the right and appears to be watching for something. Below the eagle is a ribbon with the words ‘ETERNAL VIGILANCE’ on it. At the bottom of this side is ‘1 oz. .999 FINE SILVER’.
In 1754, Benjamin Franklin published a woodcut with an image of a rattlesnake in pieces and each piece as labeled as a colony. At the top of the woodcut was ‘Join or Die’. The message was intended to convince the colonies to stay together or perish. He later said the rattlesnake is a good symbol for the colonies. Later, in 1775 the first Don’t Tread on Me flags appeared and are attributed to Continental Colonel Christopher Gadsden. Gadsden outfitted his drummers with the image and later gave Commodore Esek Hopkins to be used as a standard on his ship. Throughout history this flag has been adopted by groups as a symbol for defiance and resistance. Many think it is in reference to the 2nd Amendment and the feeling that our government is infringing on this right.
