The reverse carries an eagle with wings partly spread, an olive branch in one side of its talons and a bundle of arrows in the other, a ribbon reading ETERNAL VIGILANCE below THE PRICE OF LIBERTY along the rim. 1754 marks the snake’s debut, not the coiled Gadsden design itself.

Two Symbols, Two Different Years

The snake as an American emblem goes back to Benjamin Franklin’s “Join, or Die” woodcut, published in the Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754, showing the colonies as a snake cut into pieces that had to join together to survive. The coiled, ready-to-strike rattlesnake with the DON’T TREAD ON ME motto came two decades later, designed by Christopher Gadsden and adopted in December 1775 as a flag for the Continental Navy. This round’s 1754 date marks the symbol’s origin, not the flag that made the coiled version famous. Two decades apart, one continuous symbol.
