The obverse centers on a timber rattlesnake coiled to strike, head raised and mouth open with fangs bared, its body wound through several tight loops with the rattle visible at the tail. Every scale is individually rendered, and the snake sits on a bed of grass tufts struck in fine relief. DON’T TREAD ON ME arcs across the upper rim and ESTABLISHED IN 1754 runs along the bottom, with five-pointed stars flanking each side. The 1754 date points to Benjamin Franklin’s “Join, or Die” woodcut, the first use of the snake as an American emblem, published two decades before the Gadsden flag made the coiled version famous.
The reverse shows an eagle with wings spread and head turned right, perched above a bundled fasces. An olive branch rises on the left and arrows appear on the right, the traditional pairing of peace and readiness. A ribbon banner across the lower field reads ETERNAL VIGILANCE, completing the phrase begun by THE PRICE OF LIBERTY along the top rim. 1 oz .999 FINE SILVER is struck across the base.
