The Osborne Mint has done a great job honoring one of the most popular coins in the history of coins, the Buffalo Nickel, with this Buffalo Nickel 1 oz Copper Round. Here the classic design is rendered in .999 fine copper.

Key features:

  • Made of 1 AVDP .999 fine copper
  • James Earl Fraser design
  • Obverse has a Native American in full headdress
  • Product of the Osborne Mint
  • Reverse side has an American bison commonly referred to as a buffalo
  • Reeded edge

On the obverse side of the coin is a stoic Native American looking to the right. The Osborne mint captures all the detail of this design from the feathers in his hair and the ties where the braid begins to the lines in his face where we see his lips pulled straight in look of determination.  This is James Earl Fraser’s design which he created after having three different Native Americans sit as models. The resulting image is a combination of all three men. At the top right is ‘LIBERTY’.

The reverse side has an image of an American bison which is commonly referred to as a buffalo. This buffalo was inspired by a famous buffalo at the Bronx Zoo, “Black Diamond”. In the image we can see the animal with its head lowered. The majesty of the beast is detailed from its massive size and horns that suggest danger to its beautiful curly hair around its head. The buffalo is a symbol of the old west as it was an important part of the Native Americans’ source of food and clothing but was seen as an impedance to the western expansion. This difference in ideals is what led to many battles between the early settlers and Native Americans. Below the image of the buffalo is ‘ONE AVDP OUNCE’ and at the top of the round is  ‘.999 FINE COPPER’.

The coin commonly known as the buffalo nickel was released in 1913 and quickly became a hit design. James Earl Fraser set out to create a coin that captured the American frontier and the reception it received certainly shows that the people loved it. This design ran until 1938 when the coin was replaced with the Jefferson nickel. The design was replaced due to the fact that it was hard to create coins with it and it didn’t wear very well. Collectors still seek after the Buffalo nickel to add to their collection for the beautiful design and the nostalgia that it brings
